I and a number of other people in Australia have been able to email Mazda Japan and obtain verification of the original engine number based on chassis number. I don't see why US export vehicles would be any different. After all, they were all assembled in the same plant. It seems that Mazda retained the assembly records.

After seeing a few from 79 and 80, I noticed that the early cars came in at the Baton Rouge LA port and my 80 came in through Tacoma WA. Its odd that Mazda would switch port locations. The window sticker for my old 88 10th Anniversary stated only "Inland Port" as the delivery location. Very strange. I'd be interested to see window stickers from subsequent years after 1980. I'm glad someone rose this thread from its grave, lol.
