my favorite year would have to be 79, its the 1st year for the amazing rx7 and it sounds cooler to me when you say that you have a late 70's car.

That's easy. 84/85 GSL. State of the art first gen, perfect elegance. Got the Nikki, pure happiness. Add some RB stuff and it don't get any better.

Plus, there's lot's of 84/85 GSLs around when you need a new one, I try to get mine for under $1,500.

The White One (84 GSL) was an ebay item I picked up for $1,545 and put 90,000 miles on in four years:

And here's the Silver One, an 85 GSL, a bargain at $1,200 with 106,000 miles, now my daily driver:

79 -80

I Like the bumpers . They just seem right to me for a car with a manual choke and a Carbed engine .

I'll have to say '83. Mainly because that's the first RX7 I ever owned.

I like the 84-85 interiors the best. My first seven was a 85 and it was nicely done up for a 80's import.
81-85 fb body looks better kept stock imo then the sa does except wide body will always look cooler on the SA then the FB.
In conclusion, if in nice condition they all rock!

I love the 1980. Like the steel bumpers, tailights, and the "rotary engine" emblem on the back. The 1980 has the coolest interior. I like it better than the 79 because no plaid in the 80's. 79-80 has the cool analog radio with the volumn **** on the right!!!

The SA22's have the most personality and soul...period!

I have an 84 as well.. The 84-85 interior is just like any other 80's japanese car... 1980 car is in a class of it's own!

79 or 85. The first year and the last year a car was made are the most desirable in my opinion. The first year can be a bit more of a test, and they round out problems in the years following. IMO I would want a mint 1985 GSL-SE.

Base model Spark Yellow 79s

The 85 mph tach kinda kills it on the 80s.

I agree. I think the interiors are really sort of boxy and econo-car ish. I really like the 83 interior because it is pretty spartan yet classy/sporty and has the 125mph speedo. I like the slotted front valance on the 84-85 better than the 81-85 cars, however. Overall, I think a mix-match of the GSL-SE suspension, on an 83 with a 79 front end and a Kamei air dam and JDM electric fender mirrors.

85 is my favourite because when people ask me "what year is it" I can answer with "it's an 85, last of the first gens"

....which is a play on the line from the Mad Max 2 movie when they talk about his car and say "...Ah!, last of the v8 Intercepters...would of been a shame to blow it up"

Mine was changed when I bought it. It has the higher MPH speedo in it now. I drive an old school Suburban as a tow vehicle. It is funny going down the highway with the cruise set at 80....knowing you are almost "dumping" the speedo.

82 Silver GSL. I got one of these new, but had to give it up because of finances. Now I have one that I am restoring, not to mint condition, but to the way I want it.

God I like can't decide. You've got the 79/80's with the stylish 70s steel bumpers and "ugly" rear end that I've come to love more than the S2/S3 rear. Next is the series 2... What I own. Interior got a little more re-fined, carpeted storage bins toward the later years... The low back seats... But the S3's rule.. I mean EGI, that dash that's truely representative of the 80's, not to mention the red interior, YES!

I think if I had to pick a true favorite, it would be a 1980 leather sport in the solar gold, or either an 83 limited, or a 81-83 GSL in gold... With a close 2nd place from a tan S3 GSLSE or a 79 spark yellow, or anything in BROWN (havanna or desert)

Slightly lowered '85 GSL or SE (prefer GSL) with glass moonroof, '79/'80 front fenders, and modestly tucked '79/'80 steel bumpers. No wings or other bolt-on things. This gives you the best exterior appearance, the best drivetrain options, and the best interior. And the interior can't be red - yuck!

i like em all!

SA's are great, they have a funky 70's car in the future feel... my (now NODEs) red SA is a HOOT up in the mountains.

the GSL-SE is obviously one of the best cars mazda has ever made

the 81-83's are nice, they feel more modern than the SA, but still have the traditional sports car dash/interior. my 83 LE was really nice to drive, all the controls were light, but direct, its a lot like an alfa romeo spider, except its better.

84-85 12a's are maybe my least favorite, but ive had several, and liked em all

my wish list would be a spark yellow SA, 81-81 GSL in mayan gold, an 83 LE, 84-85 gsl-se probably silver with red...
