Unhappy What has happened to parts Prices

My water pump is making that mild knawing sound indicative of bearings beginning to fail. No seepage yet; but, I don't like the unwelcome noise under the hood so I went looking for a replacement. Stopped in at my closest dealer to get a replacement for my 84 GSL-SE and WOW! The first dealer quoted $347.00

I called MAZMART and they offered a pump assembly for $267. The MAZMART team advised against the second Mazda Dealer's $84.00 rebuild as an ill advised, substandard pump not worth the savings of $$ given the rotaries sensitivity to heat.

What do you say gentlemen? I love my GSL-SE and don't want to compromise her in any way; but, a $267.00 water pump? That seems just a little crazy to me.....

Did you check any of the parts stores around Atl? I've been using water pumps from Advance for years with no problems. At their online store(partsamerica.com) you can get a brand new pump starting at 37.99 and up. Almost all have limited lifetime warranty against defect. There is one cheaper, but it's a reman.

Going to a dealer for parts like that is stupid. Dealers are known to be ludicrous.

I only get t-stats and oil filters for my RX-7s at dealerships, everything else is from local auto stores or rock auto.

Thats absurd...

I picked a genuine OEM mazda waterpump this summer..

Came with a gasket, and cost right around $100 cdn.

I wouldnt EVER buy an aftermarket waterpump after seeing the last one I had. Frickin impeller was super thin gauge steel, stamped out.
Bearings were smaller, and the casting looked like ****.

Rebuilt may be a better option than aftermarket, but for me theres OEM or nothing.

Wink All right already; I got it!

Guys,

I've been buying parts at NAPA, AutoZone and Advance for years as well. I was looking for confirmation from you guys and to throw the BS flag on my friendly MAZMART reseller.

If the AutoZone pump is OK by the collective wisdom of the crew then I'm there and I'll use the extra $$300 to buy gas!

Thanks

They must have looked up the fan clutch, not the water pump because a new pump from Mazdatrix is only $56.00 and they are about what the dealer charges.

Yeah AutoZone has Lifetime Warrenty water pumps as well, brand new. No need for the stealership for items like that. I'm running a Failsafe thermostat in my FB as well for all those people who are OEM or nothing. It's working just great and if it fails it will stick open to prevent overheating.

EDIT: AutoZone can order a brand new Duralast waterpump for $35.99 with Lifetime Warrenty.

I can yank one from a car at Pick-n-Pull for you. No history, no warranty and I'll let it go for only $200. Deal?

johnfoothill,
It's good to see that you would help a fellow RX-7 enthusiast out like that yur time and effort with that $200 used speciman from the salvage yard. I think I'll have to go with the $35 model from AutoZone instead. But thanks again.

The RX-7Club team has confirmed my suspicians in thier normal tactful way.

Geez! I love this crew.......

Thanks all

thats like the oldest rookie move in the book. the way they list the rotary water pumps is different from everything else.

mazda part number is N232-99-153B, mazdatrix lists for $55, which is high

the aftermarket ones have a lifetime warranty because you need it.

^^^Why do you say that? I have liftime warrenty plug wires and have never had to replace them on any of my vehicles. Same for the brake pads, they've barely worn in 3 years. Your logic of if it isn't Mazda parts or overpriced stuff from somehwere reputable it isn't good is terrible.

They've been daily driven on since I put them on 3 years ago(give or take a few months here and there) and they've made a cross country trip. I usually don't brake hard at all. I usually just down shift and engine brake.

I've never trusted AZ parts and never will. Worked at NAPA for a little over a year, half of our customers had come straight from that **** hole to buy our stuff because they sold such crap.

Hahaha don't be jealous guys. Yeah some of the stuff we sell is crap(like the cheap ****) but I haven't had any problem with any of the parts I've gotten(with the exception of getting wrong parts from out hub store in Baltimore, that place is a joke). The problem that we all face as parts sellers are the people that have no clue what they are doing, getting the wrong parts due to mis-information given, and then ******* there **** up cause they're clueless. Duralast batteries are pretty legit though, we rarely need to warrenty any out within free replacement. Most of the time it's shitty Wal-Mart batteries we get as cores or *cough*Autocraft*cough*

Could also be that Georgia has the only Advanced thats worth a damn LOL. The one's here are terrible and service is horrid. I tried finding some brake line to replace the clutch hardline on my SA and I kept telling the kid that it's metric line and he kept trying to give me 3/16" line! We've had customers complain that they are rude as well as incompitent. The Napa I dealt with in Idaho was great but they are expensive. The one here is a joke.
