Trouble Connecting Engine/Trans

Hey,

Recently rebuilt the 12A in my '82 Rx7 FB but have been having trouble reconnecting the engine(12A) and transmission(5 speed manual). I'll attach some pictures as to the current status, any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks

welcome to the board.

i can't see any of the photos.

the things that i would suggest checking are:

1. make sure the clutch is aligned
2. make sure the pilot bearing has not crapped itself
3. make sure the transmission is jacked up enough to be at a decent angle to receive the engine

if they seem to get close but not enough to catch a bolt, try turning the engine by hand and see if it will move the rest of the way.

Getting them aligned is the tricky part. Having another set of hands will greatly help with this.

I did myself but it took almost 2 hours. With the transmission mounted and a jack under it, I stood in the engine bay with the engine hanging from a cherry picker. Then it was hopping back and forth adjusting the jack and cherry picker to get the angle close enough to push the engine on by hand.

Do NOT force it together with the engine to transmission mating bolts. The pilot bearing can be damaged that way.

Hey aklehm82rx7 .. welcome to the forum.

I converted your images for you so other members can see them. This forum doesn't support the newer HEIC file format.

You will need to rock the engine a little to get the trans shaft spines to mesh. Don't go crazy.

Your angles are way off. You're not even close. As the others have stated, get a wooden block under the bell housing of the trans, then a jack under that, and apply Jack pressure to the front of the trans until the input shaft and flywheel pilot bearing hole are aligned. The trans bell housing, being somewhat rounded, will try to roll one direction or another, which can be used to your advantage in getting enough mounting bolts lined up to serve as guides.

Typically, once you get it lined up correctly, it will go on except for he last 1/2"... This is due to hydrostatic lock from either lubing the pilot bearing too much, or because the rubber oil seal for the pilot bearing is preventing air from escaping. The fix at that point is to tighten things down slightly, walk away for a few hours (*letting air pressure equlize...), tighten it down a bit more,... grab a beer or two,... tighten down a bit more,...

Don't get frustrated. Take your time. Rushing things at this point only leads to damage you'll regret later,

Also, resist the temptation to use a bolt to draw it together.
