transmission rebuild questions

so here's the story: my friend bought a pair of rx7s a 1980 in light blue and a white 1982 for 100 dollars each. we have since taken the 1980 from seized engine to passing Oregon emissions and being used as a daily (no engine rebuild required) the 82 had major rust issues and was used mainly for parts and to learn how to get things apart. However as we have been driving it the first to second and second to third shift have been getting shall we say "crunchy" with shifting third to second for massive backfires is nearly impossible above 10 mph. My question is where to get the synchros and bearings required (preferably for less than the exorbitant price atkins wants for them) and also how to tell the difference between a single ball and double ball front counter shaft. transmission is a 5 speed. I can make or find alternatives to all the mazda "specialty" tools so thats no problem. This website seems to have what i need for a good price but no clue on the quality https://cobratransmission.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2_2011

Thanks for any help, Brennan

When I rebuilt the tranny on my old FB I bought the bearings/synchros from this guy:

https://www.ebay.com/usr/transdeals4...p2047675.l2559

He was a friendly seller and the parts all seemed to be good quality. Rebuild went smooth and and had no issues for the rest of my ownership and I have heard no complaints from the guy I sold it to.

Kind of new to RX-7's but I just got a 1985 GLS-SE with a spare trans, it seems like 2nd gear and reverse and hard to get into while the car is on. How do you know if it's one ball or two? Also what is the name of the transmission?
