Connect the wires from the head unit plug to the wires from the adapter plugs. Colors probably match. Check the instructions for your head unit to be sure. Plug in adapter plugs to stock plugs.

Wiring manuals are here.

They usually refer to them as "Speaker Harness". You can pick em up at Bestbuy and similar stores for pretty cheap usually

all u need is a switched +12v, and ground. u'll want to run ur own speaker wires. there's a thread about the pin outs in that round plug for use with the factory amps.

I've done three installs using them myself, a 91 Buick Park Avenue, a 06 Mitsubishi Lancer and a 99 Mazda 626. They seemed to work fine for me every time. It more or less turns the specialized speaker plugs from the factory decks and makes them universal. Your deck should come with the specialty plugs for it and they will more than likely match up (by color) with the ones off the wiring harness.

The deck in the 7 Im getting was a complete overhaul, speakers, wires, and deck, so Ive never actually done one on an rx7 but i cant imagine its any different. Just make sure you follow the directions and the labels on your wires.

I would recommend doing a complete overhaul though. Upgrading your speakers is always a good thing if you like your music to sound great. I'm not sure on what your budget looks like for this project but its generally not a wallet killer if you shop around.

I wouldn't purchase any kind of adapter kit for these cars. Doing a good install is too easy without a kit. rxtasy3 was right. Just get a power tester to find the power wires through the switch and one straight from the battery. Use a male spade terminal to slide right into the factory plug. Ground the head unit on a screw touching metal under the dash. Then run new speaker wire. Too easy.

I really don't mean to thread jack but where would you go about mounting a DIN head unit in an 81?

Why tap a new source for power? Buy the $10 adapter, and just use it for your power source. If you want to run new speaker wires, fine but you would be better using the original radio power circuit and fuse.

I didn't mean to find an altogether new power source. When I did mine I just found which wires in the original stereo plug were for the power and used them. I used spade terminals because that is cheaper then $10. Then the same relay and fuse would be used for the new stereo as the original stereo. Running a completely new power source or taping into other electronics power sources would be pretty dumb and probably cause some burnt up fuses.
