Talking Spent some time with My New FB project. Thought I'd share some pics..

Well, I finally got my recent Project RX7 purchase home this past week, and spent some time cleaning it out and assessing what parts I actually have with it, and .... well, start formulating a plan. Since I took some shots of it from initial delivery to the end of the weekend, I figured I would share them with you all and do a kind of n00b intro type dealio.

Anyway, the specs: Its an 83 GSL with a glass roof. Suffered a dash fire (suspect due to aftermarket radio) prior to PO. Interior was mostly stripped by PO due to damage and engine was removed for a rebuild and .... well is MIA. With the purchase I got upgraded front brakes, Koni struts with sports springs (unknown manf) with the fronts having adjustable perches (ala ground control style), the rear 4-point portion of an Autopower roll cage with door bars (was cut out of another IT car), a rebuilt nikki carb that was billed as a Yaw carb, 2 sets of rims with race rubber and ice race rubber, 2 sets of tailights, 2 transmissions, 2 rearends (one being LSD apparently) and a test engine stand. All said and done, I dont think it was a bad purchase.

The eventual goal is to get it prepped for IT Class racing...

Anyway, heres the pics,
Just delivered:

After a weekend of cleaning and organizing parts:

And some goodies I picked up today to help the project along.

Sooooo, there she is.. looks like I got my work cut out for me, it'll be a long endeavor, and I'll be sure to use the archives here as well as ask questions when I cant find the answer.

Yes.... indeed they are 12A's. All 4 of them are actually. From conversations with the original owner I would guess them to be early 12A's, I'm still learning the engine nomenclature so apologize on not knowing if they are SA's, but I was told (and currently have an email to confirm) they came out of RX-3's and 4's.

And I actually got them from a friend of mine I Auto-x with, he had a stockpile from when he was helping run the Rotary club up here. After hearing of my project 7 and need for an engine, he graciously donated them to the cause to get another 7 on the course.

i think there are more of those early 12a's floating around than the later ones....

the 3 on the left are all pre 74 top mount starter engines, so its rx2 and pre 73 rx3. 6mm carbon seals, dual side seals etc etc they are neat, but unless you're vintage racing kinda useless.

the one on the right is a 74-75 rx2/3 engine, should have the big port irons, 3mm iron seals, its the next newer engine from the 73 and earlier stuff.

76-80 they revised the seals, but in an effort to get more mileage, took away the big ports.

81-82 got again better seals (which will go right into the 74-75 engine), and they changed the emissions setup for a cat

83-85 got lighter rotors.

Hmmmmm, could tell all of that from the pics? DAMN.....

So I am taking it the best route would be to tear into the one on the right since it would be the closest "plug-n-play" option? I will search later tonight when I have time but is there a cheat sheet for what's interchangeable and what isnt? (i.e., are the 3 completely useless or can they be dropped into the 7?)

hmm cheat sheet? maybe the closest is the felix wankel web site?

only real difference is that the 73 style motors have a different bellhousing bolt pattern, other than that they all interchange

Thanks... I'll check out the wankel site. I guess what I meant was what parts were interchangeable between the 12a renditions, or how compatible they are between one another. (i.e. can I use the 73 block with an 83 carb and starter with 85 manifold... etc... more or less some of the FAQ I need to start digging into)

As for the wheel in the background, that is a leftover RS4 DTM wheel I had on my B5 S4, before a pothole split the inner lip.
