you could put a fake timing mark that is dead on for what he'll be looking for... some easy to remove yellow paint. white out and a marker. ha ha. then take it off afterwards

I set my timing correctly and still failed smog. The smog shop guy said I should be able to pass by leaning out my carb.

Isn't the only mixture screw on the carb for idle and doens't effect anything above 2000?

I think it has something to do with my ACV? When I give it gas should it be pumping air into the air cleaner

The FSM has a specific test routine for the ACV; it's a little more complicated than a simple "RPM vs flow" comparison. The test isn't real hard to work thru.

Quite the contrary; a missing or illegible timing mark is a justifiable reason for failing a car.

The low NO shows that you have plenty of room to lean the car out and not worry about failing on NO. It is just too darn rich right now.

If you have a little bit of spare time on your hands you can come by my shop on Sunday and we can have a look. I am down in Santa Clara.

If you have any other question just PM me, I will be glad to help.

Thanks to thunkrd for sending me a link to this thread. I never go in the 1st gen section.

Seriously, I'm surprised... lack of a blob of paint can get you failed.

What a ridiculous state we live in.

Since the tube from the ACV to the airbox was blowing out air I connected that to downpipe for the cat. And routed the one that went to it originally to the grey thing in the airbox.

That lowered my CO% greatly and made me pass, but I still failed for HC.

yes it did pass it pass

yes you are running rich because of your low NO numbers. To fix this you need a better cat with a working ACV.

Amen to that!

I would give up having a job if it meant taking away the smog check program; at least at the state level... nothing wrong with making sure a new production car has to meet some sort of federal standard.... Here in CA it is just one big screwed up scam/bureaucracy put together by money greedy companies and their lobbyists.

Diesel in 2010, soon after motorcycles. Get ready guys!

^ MOTORCYCLES? I was just talking about how badly my cbr 1000 would fail if I had to smog it

Tried to shim my ACV but when i gave it gas air still went into the air box? Denatured alcohol gave me hydrocarbons readings in the 700range, put 10 gallons of gas in and it dropped to 200-300

Do you remember a few years back when the city of LA tried to mandate catalysts on lawnmowers and leaf blowers? Or to outlaw gas leaf blowers in favor of electric?

how much denatured alcohol did you use? search for other people's results as i am not sure of the ratio is preferred. make sure to fill your tank up after to dilute it.

simple acv test: pull out that tube from acv to airbox (i think it's that one that you fed to your cat and switched with the one thats supposed to go to the cat to your airbox) from the airbox inlet and then rev your car to 2500+ rpm. you should not feel air coming out of that tube. if more air keeps coming out then you have a defective acv.

maybe the cats you used before are getting worn out and need replacing too.

yeah man thats why i switched it cuz air is coming out. i tried to shim it and it didn't change anything. i've spent so much more on failed smogs then I have on my car.

i tried putting on another acv and it did the same thing, i tried to shim both of them but with no luck

i put 1 gallon of denatured alcohol to 2 or 3 gallons of gas and it made it way worse

Are you for reals????

Nope I never heard of that... what a freakin' joke.

It is seriously only going to get worse from here out... I am surprised cows don't have catalytic converters sticking out of their buttholes. Oh, and not to mention how much electronics are going to shoot up in costs once all the greenhouse gas bills get put into effect.
