OH S2 Shift Buzzer

I recently discovered a thread on here that mentioned that the S2 models do not feature shift buzzers. If this is true, it would probably explain why my 83 has given no hint of trying to go off at redline. I thought for the longest time that something was broken, but apparently not.

So my question is this: Would it be possible to add a shift buzzer to an S2? One of the things that really made me want to get an RX-7 was the shift buzzer (and rotary ofc), but was kind of disappointed when my 83 appeared to be missing it. I don't necessarily need a shift light, but I definitely want to hear that buzzer. If this is possible, I'll need some detailed instructions and/or someone to help walk me through it; I haven't done anything like this on a car, but I definitely want to do it if I can.

My guess it's been removed, my 85 has a shift buzzer.

I agree, I think they all have it. Although I'd rather have a light as I don't always hear it over the exhaust.

Nope, some 80 models (mine) did not come with a buzzer. So early S2s may have no buzzer either. The way to tell is to pull you instrument console and see if the buzzer is soldered in on the PCB board or not. Like I said, my 80 didn't have one and I'm the second owner since 83 and the car was only 2.5 years old when I got it.

My 80 does not have an overrev buzzer. I've had two other 80's that also did not have it. All of my S3's and up have had it.

My 79 has a buzzer.

Kind of weird you guys are saying 80 s1’s and s2’s don’t have them.. could it be based on the model maybe? S model maybe doesn’t have a buzzer but the GS does.. my 79 is a GS

Mines an 80 GS, its a change in the 80 model year. @DivinDriver on here has an 80 (early model I believe) and he has a buzzer on his. I'm sure he will be along to testify.

I didn't hear a buzzer in my '83 GS last night. I was waiting to hear it.

My 83 is also a GS. I've been meaning to take the dash apart at some point to figure out some other issues (door chime, cluster dimmer switch, ignition key illumination, etc). I wouldn't know what the circuit looks like, or even how to get the cluster out though.

Huh, this is interesting. I always thought mine was broken since I figured all first gens had one. I have a 1980 GS as well so perhaps it doesn't?

Is the door/seat belt buzzer different from the over-rev buzzer?

Join the club! I have the door and seat belt buzzer too. They are different. The over rev buzzer is normally mount on the console PCB that holds the speedo and tach etc.

Trust me, you would definitely know when you trip the rev buzzer, scared the life out of my wife the first time she heard it, followed with "don't drive so fast"😂😂

My 9yo asked what the buzzing was, and I told him it means the car is about to blow up. When he shows his friends the car he tells them about the "blow up buzzer" and says it goes off "a lot".

I've not once ever heard an over-rev buzzer in my 83 GSL. Here's the back of the instrument cluster and I don't see any buzzer like components...

Ha! I had convinced myself that was the 7V DC regulator for the gas/oil/temp gauges.

Guess I'm not exploring the high end RPMs with enough vigor...or it's just broken
