I was just thinking during auto class one day; why isn't there a rotary hybrid?

I mean if you remember simple generators and the theory behind electric motors/generators then wouldn't a rotary engine be an ideal testbed for the technology?

I.E.

-Generators produce more power at higher RPMs
-Rotaries love to operate at high RPMs

I don't know it just seemed like something strangely simple that I never got answered...

I thought of this years ago. The rotary has lots of good qualities in a hybrid setup:

1-low vibration
2-easy starting
3-few moving parts to wear out
4-compact and light

BTW, I don't think rotarys 'love' high RPM (guys who overrev are always rebuilding and replacing apex seals) but they tolerate the occasional mistake fairly well. But the rotary does handle extended periods at elevated revs (say, 5000rpm) very well.

To make a hybrid RX-7 you'd remove the transmission, drive shaft, and differential. I suppose the transmission space would be taken by a generator and two DC motors drive independent rear wheels. I'm not sure where you'd have batteries, though you could start by reducing the gas tank and making room there.

I think a rotary hybrid in a 4door passenger car is a big winner.

I'm looking at a more Prius/Accord like set-up like bliffle was talking about...

BTW I agree with everything you said, I was actually thinking of a Hybrid 3,6, or RX8 since they seem to be the more logical choices for a hybrid rotary; as you said space would become a bit of an issue with a 300-500 volt battery being required and whatnot.
