Roof Rack

Anyone ever seen a luggage roof rack for a 79. It was one of the options listed on the 79 sales brochure along with the tonneau cover (which I have). If anyone has pictures of one, could you please post them. I'm trying o find one or thinking about making one.

Please, no. Nothing against you, if I had pictures I would post them. IMHO, Roof/Trunk/Extra Luggage Racks are gaudy.

Humm.. Those are some funny looking roof racks. Thought roof racks go on the roof. And I wasn't asking for anyones opinion of how they thought they looked. Just wondering if anyone has pics of one.

Sorry for getting your thread off topic and thank you for not blowing a head gaskit about it. I'll try to find some pic's.

And skidtron, yes it had a LSD, from what I remember he was using the trailer so he could have a spare rear end for the race car, plus have room to haul a bunch of equipment for the races.

Hell ya! I was thinking the exact same thing. It's like a spare half of a car. That's cool.

the luggage rack is not an external option. the luggage rack mounts in the hatch and allows for stacked luggage or provides a barrier so that your pile luggage doesnt roll around. the rack is chrome in color and is in kind of a "U" shape. i do not have a picture that i can find.

This thread made me think of Volkswagens as soon as I saw it.

Makes me want to turn my parts car into a hoodride RX7.

Wrong.

What you are describing is the luggage bar (I have one), and it was designed to stop the luggage from flying forward if you had to stop fast. The bar does not allow for stacking luggage, as it isn't even as high as a standard suitcase laying on it's side. It stops suitcases and small packages from coming into the driver's area, or hitting the shifter. The luggage rack he is looking for DID go on the outside of the car, mounted across the roof from doorframe to doorframe, and also had provisions to mount the ski rack to it, though the ski rack could be used independently.

As for the RX-7 trailers, the only thing I never understood is why folks with FBs use SAs for trailers. I'm making an SA one to tow behind my LS- also an SA. I think the whole idea loses a little wow factor when the rear ends don't match, and even worse when they aren't even painted the same color.

Neal.

perhaps i am thinking of the luggage bar. i hae seen aftermarket bars that were constructed using two bars instead of one, allowing for stacked luggage. i have also seen the oem bars using only one bar.

You might be able to save yourself some trouble by checking out Thule roof racks. They make load carrier bars that attach to the rain gutters. The luggage box would attach to the load carriers. The only problem might be the short roof line. You need to see if the most closely spaced set of mounting holes will accomodate the widest spacing you can get on the load bars. If you want I can measure the maximun distance that can be achieved between the load bars as I use them for my bike. You would need to obtain the measurements on the mounting hole spacing from a dealer.
