I just wanted to post this up for people's amusement. I blew my rear axle this summer with 185/70R13 all season BF Goodrich radials. It CAN be done. Bought the car with noisy bearings in the rear axle and a little bit of gear whine, and after 6 auto-x launches (5.5k, flat foot, side step the clutch), and one launch on a backroad with one of my buddies in the car, this is the result, and the reason why my FB was down for about 4 weeks this summer. My diagnosis without being able to get the case apart (didn't try too hard) was that the gear separation force caused the pinion to move forward in the housing, crushing the crush collar, causing all my gear oil to drain out and caused me massive amounts of gears lash.
