Unhappy Quick VIN question, not in FAQ...

I was reading the VIN FAQ, and it stated the listing of letter-to-year combos (1981 is A, 82 is B, etc).

My title says "1983" under year, but the VIN code is a "D" (1984). So what year is it!?

Is your dash round? Then it's 83. It could be early 1984 they made 83 "model". A year model is more of a set of options than an exact production date.

It has the round air vents on the sides and not the square ones. I'm just hoping I don't run into any trouble re-titling it, I just bought it and it's an Oregon title and I'm titling it in Washington.

Like I said it's a "model year" not a production year. It's a set of blueprints they have to submit to NTSB and DoT for import sales safety etc etc.

Let me try to rephrase that. Say your in a bar or call a buddy and say "I purchased a 1983 RX7". You are not telling anyone
that you purchased a car made in 1983. But rather a vehicle made to the specifications of the 83 model, reguardless of the production date.

Need to change the FAQ then, it says 81=A, 82=B, 83=C, etc.

Yep. '83=D, '84=E You have an '83. What Vashner is saying is true, but normally not in that way. For instance, your '83 could be built in '82, but not in '84. Typically they start building the next model year in mid-late the year before. For instance, my '84 was built Jan. '84, but they were making the '84 model several months (I believe Aug./Sept. '83) before mine was built.

Yea I think it was a transitional delay. Probably from the new exhaust, emissions, dashboard and couple other things. Since they kept using the round dash for exports too shows they didn't do a total conversion at the factory.

Retooling delay probably.
