Is this normal? It backfires when warming up with choke on. Clogged cat? The section right before the car gets a little orange when warming up with choke on revving at 2-2500 rpm for a couple minutes.

Also has anybody had experiences with Atkins Rotary oil filters? They claim they are made by the same makers for Mazda.

Any other break-in techniques anybody recommends (besides oil change at 500 miles)? Premix for the life of this rebuild?

Thanks! Any answer to any question is appreciated.

The vid of it warmed up sounds pretty damn good. 12A Looks damn good too all nice and shiny in the engine bay. It may be the distortion but i cant tell its backfiring. That stock cat needs to go man, its sooo restrictive puts a stranglehold on yours cars ability to breathe freely. Ur emissions exempt partner, get rid of the cat(s)! LOL I do know that mine (at cold startup) will gurgle and pop for a couple minutes until she gets warm and it works its way up to the rpm limit of the choke.

Oh yes it sounds real nice after it is warmed up. Thanks for the compliments too.. I did spend a little time using a towel to clean my engine bay a little but still not done. I have a Bonez Performance cat on mine (I know.. not original) that I bought from Rotary Performance and I do need to pass emissions still forever.. California... yea nuff said. Oh and the last video is popping.. a lot very fast. If this is normal then thats fine lol. My ACV was probably not feeding it air for about a year and a half but now I have a fully working one so maybe my cat is starting to burn it off or has been.

Premix for sure then!

Also I bought a 6 pack of Nippon filters from Atkins for $30 shipped. Same makers for Mazda but I just wasn't sure about Atkins's own brand.. oh well.

Thanks for the help. Anybody else wants to chime in about my popping exhaust or break-in techniques please do so!

Well so far my car has been running excellent with no problems at all! I am still breaking it in and getting ready for the first oil change at 500 miles. I guess I'm a little paranoid since this is my first rebuild and I want to keep the engine clean and strong with lots of life for as long as I can since I spent a lot of money too.

So I've been reading a lot on here especially about top notch maintainance tips. It seems to be a good idea to use name brand products such as top tier fuels. I prefer Chevron with Techron but Shell and 76 seem to be good too. Also I have a case of Castrol GTX 20W-50 so I'll be using that mostly but currently I have Mobil 1 10W-30 which others have preferred that weight and brand or 10W-40 or 15W-40 or even 5W-20 (lol yes I have read that which oil is the best thread like 5 times already). I also bought "Nippon" oil filters from Atkins which have the Mazda part number on it but they're made by Altrom Group. Hopefully this is comparable to Mazda OEM standards. As for plugs and wires I always stick with OEM NGK part numbers. I will be purchasing some two-stroke for premix soon as well!

Anything else I missed?

So I finally found that dumb tiny mini SD adapter so I can transfer the pictures and video I took on my phone when the engine was being put in and the very first start up.

Also instead of the 20W-50 I'll be going with GTX 10W-30 plus its also getting cold in California too. The premix I'm running is .5oz/1gal gas Supertech (Walmart) TC-W3 certified (blue tint). I think it's made by Penzoil/Quakerstate.

Now this is nice to see. I am the original owner of my 1980 RX-7. It too will probably need a total rebuild as it has been garaged for @ 15 yrs. It sounds like Ben, (Karak), would be the guy if I could get him. Maybe I will get lucky!

Thank you for the compliments! She's running pretty smooth now as I had vibration issues caused by a damaged flywheel. Also I got my FMOC back a while ago and its finally fixed with no leaks!
