You can put a set of serviceable, new, stock -size tires under an SA for about $200.

Considering the possible results of losing a tire, that's cheap insurance. I've spent more than that on rattle-can paint over the years.

(Says the guy who currently has 16-year-old tires on his car.)

okay so I'm gonna reopen this thread, currently I'm a junior and next year Georgia students are required to do a "senior" project, which essentially is a research project on any topic chosen, this year someone is doing a complete rebuild of a 350 v-8.

so I've decided to take it one step further and restore my 7.

I need a mentor for the project, luckily my girlfriends dad is a certified mechanic and used to build motors for racing 7's and he said he will help with the rebuild for directional purposes.

I'm going to be starting this weekend to allow enough time to finish it by the due date in may 2010.

stuff to be done(in order):
engine and carb rebuild(with spray painted parts blue and polished theme)
paint engine bay black
refurbished fuel tank
new carpet
new dashboard
new seats
new muffler
new tires
possibly respray the car to a factory colored blue (I'm not a fan of silver on a car body)

I think I can do the entire project for just about $1000

I also plan to update progress on a weekly basis with pictures so stay tuned in for this one, lots of hard work and goodies going into it!!

^^ that was the plan =]

Plus my Ford I rebuilt in October from a blown head gasket so I just rebuilt it because I could.

But I figure rotary engines are something most people don't know a lot about then to really go the extra mile I'm gonna bring the car back to its natural glory.

Good job! A 1st Gen is a wise choice as a first car. They are so easy to work on and upgrade. It sounds like you are a young Rotorhead, welcome... I do agree with everyone else, I've had my share of OH **** moments, they can easily bit you in the *** if you not careful. A stock seven is perfect, for now. My first car was an 83 @ age 19, I loved it so much I bought 2 more

week 1:

This week I rearranged the garage, now everything is easier to get to. I also cleaned out the trunk and put needed parts back there. finally i started to disassemble the top part, taking out whats in the way and marked where it goes.

Today I got myself a temp job, making about 175 each week.

next mission is a new gas tank.

This is good to see! I was 15 when I got my first Rx-7 and im 17 now. It's been the best choice of my life! so far ive swapped motors and removed the emissions system. she has 167,000kms now and only 3000 of those are mine ! I plan on keeping her for as long as possible since ive grown an extreme passion for Rotary engines and Rx-7s. After I graduate in June I hope to sink alot of money into my rex. It's a great feeling when I pull into the parking lot at school, giv' er a rev to all the eyes glaring at her, I really do feel privledged to own a first generation Rx-7 at my age and to have brought her back to life and back to the road. It's one hell of a journey that I dont ever plan on stoping! .. as for going lightly, its a must until you get the hang out it, my very first rx7 was an automatic, wasnt road worthy so i decided to take it to a dirt rally track, lol anyway it ended up in the ditch after whipping back out of a fishtail. Luckily 7's are light it was easy to get out. As for right now, my pride and joy rx7 is 5speed and I havent gone lightly since I first fired her up after the motor swap, which . . yeah yeah yeah, was another stock 12a, but still dont under-estimate it, the rear end will deffinetly slide if you hit it especially in rain or snow! but for me i take advantage of the rain and snow and have tons of fun! once you get the hang of it, im sure you will too! anyway after writing this "short story" just wanted to tell yah to keep at it cause its all VERY worth it.

Week 2:
just more prepairing for the build, going to wait until its warm, i did go to the bone yard and picked up a rear trunk hold down that says RX-7 on it. and i got my 'mentor' up to speed with the project, Augusta is expecting a snow storm tomorrow(omfg! in Georgia?!?!) and hopefully school will be closed then I'm gonna rip out the padding under the rear carpet because its making the car smell really bad! and I'm also going to find a way to reuse my broken center consol...
