WA Mazda Special Tools

Does anyone know how to get a hold of the special tools for mazda rx-7's, such a s rear axle shaft puller, clutch disk centring tool, tubular dowl puller, engine stand, eccentric shaft bearing puller, other various pullers, etc. These type tools are listed in the back of the 1980 mazda rx-7 service manual.

I have come to realize that most of these tools are close to impossible to get, so any web vendor, or store world/nation wide would be very helpful.

most pullers are available to rent from Autozone and types. The clutch centering tool is available when you order your clutch, i believe mazdatrix has them for sale seperately. Engine stand requires an adapter, Pineapple Racing makes one and I believe Racing Beat or Mazdatrix. Rear axle shaft puller ie slide hammer, rent it or buy one, just make sure you unscrew the 4 bolts holding it on first or you'll straighten out the hook on your slide hammer.

i have no special tools. had the place i got all the stuff to do my build install the bearings. engine stand isn't really needed. clutches usually come with alignment tool, i use an input shaft from an old tranny. never found out the reason u needed the dowel puller. axle puller is just too easy to make.

the only special mazda tool that i've ever needed to use and own is the mazda pilot bearing puller. its highly reccomended that you purchase this if you do your own work and plan to replace a clutch.

the brass rotor bearing installer/removal tools are very handy as well. both tools are still available and do have mazda part numbers.

Did you know... the MazdaTrix pilot bearing puller can double as an axle puller?

would be nice to make a special head for it so that you can adapt an end on it to do that!

Thanks!
Do you have any recommendations for special tools that you should definently have for your 1980 Mazda Rx-7. I have heard that many are not really needed, and a regular tool set/tool rentals will work.

I recommend getting a cheap set of metric wrenches and I mean the cheap crap at the front counter that just says Forged Steel China. Get a torch, vise and a hammer, heat and bend the 10 and 12 mm enough to clear areas and still get good leverage. Think carb removal and BS engine accessory bolts and saving a good chunk of your knuckles.

I guess I wonder if you NEED all these - at once? What shape is your SA in that you are looking for all this stuff?? I love to have all the right tools like everyone here, but some of what you describe can be use-once-if-ever tools. My point is, unless your undertaking a particular project, I would get the specialty stuff as you NEED it. For example, the Mazda Pilot Bearing Tool - waaay cool to have - is usually about $100+, so why get it unless you are, say, doing a clutch job? The Dowel Tool: when I pulled my 12A apart, I could pull the dowel pins by hand, so this would NOT have been a needed purchase. Just sayin'-

As others have suggested, make sure (forgive if this is obvious!) you have the basics you'll use everyday first.

Welcome and PLEASE - post pics of your ride. Always nice to have another SA in the mix here-!

I had a stuck one once... turns out the MT pilot puller (without the head on it) threaded right into the dowel. Pop!

Nice of Mazda to use the same thread for so many things.

i have that harbour freight puller and it didnt work at all for me. i bought the mazda puller the next day and it was the best $110 i've ever spent. some people have gotten the harbour freight one to work. not me. i'll post a pic after i wake up of the two side by side and with a "jaw" comparison.

Take up autocrossing and join Mazda Comp. You can get what you need at a deep discount from them. But in reality the only tool you will need is the pilot bearing puller. The others really aren't needed or you can rent for free at the local parts store.
