I have nothing but respect for those cars but they are not muscle cars. Several of the cars you mentioned were homologation specials that allowed the cars/engines to be used in road racing. The 340 cars were the same deal and were quick but they weren't as fast as 440/Hemi powered car. Heck, a true Mustang Boss 302/Camaro Z28 302 was a pretty gutless car at low RPMs.
The Boss 302, for example, had intake valves (2.25" in diameter) that were bigger than a 454 Chevy. A friend of mine road raced a 69 Boss 302 in the early 70s and he said the car would barely get out of its own way below 4K RPMs. Now the same car from 6-8K RPM was a beast!
I was around when muscle cars were built and grew up wanting one as they became legendary. The definition of a muscle car used to be any light weight, bare bones car with the biggest engine that can be fitted. Like the original 64 GTO that started the ball rolling. Now the Muscle Car label is applied to anything old with a V8 or a new American made performance car. I even saw an magazine article that hung that moniker on my 305HP V6 Mustang.......pleeeeeaaaazzzzee
As far as how fast the old cars were.....not fast by modern standards. But if you fit some DOT drag tires and decent drag shocks you would have something.

There are lots of muscle cars with small blocks! There are also plenty of cars with big Blocks that I wouldnt consider muscle cars. I had a buddy that had a 1969 Caddy... It had like 500cu of big block in it... by your standards, thats a muscle car??? thing was weaker than ****... There were Cobra's that were built and raced with 289's I guess there not muscle cars??? dude your way off on this one... do some research
Meaning is fluid. A muscle car is/was an intermediate coupe chevelle, coronet, belvedere, lemans, fairlane, skylark etc. with a big motor and minimal options.
Mustangs, camaros, barracudas, javelins are/were pony cars. Different animals. But makes no difference now.
Things were so simple then.

WAIT A MINUTE..... i just realized that the same person that started this thread is the same person that a few threads down was complaining saying "this forum sucks" and "how do you unsubscribe?" i think this thread was a trick to get us to turn on each other lol.
Just a trick for you..PJ7
hey if I remember right didn't I see some where were your 7 has a 4 port 13b, with a weber or something like that? so its not even close to a stock 7. I had forgot that till I seen a pic you had posted in a different thread. that's when it hit me, until then I thought you were talking you have a stock 7 against a stock 67 chevy. that's why I was arguing so bad to start ,but knowing that now im not surprised at all you out ran it.

I would rather have the old Chev, as I am a Chevy guy. But I cant afford an early Camaro anymore... I love my newfound RX7....it drives amazingly well for what it is....
