importing cars from japan
well heres the story. I'm going into the navy in may. and I'm trying to wait to get shipped to japan because i want to either pick up a car and or an engine. i was thinking about a newer Cosmo Eunos like these ones http://www.3rotor.com/jc_series.htm always wanted one. but if i don't find one in good shape i would probably take an engine ECU and the harness. what all needs to be replaced on the car if i import it? i know the wind shield and headlights. but what else?

You would have to ask another military person about it i guess. You are doing it in a manner completly diffrent than most. The last person i knew had one of there buddys take posseison of a import in canada. Then the car got registered there first than brought to the us. But i have no idea about the logistics of how it happned!
Ask these guys how they got theres into canada!

the reason i ask is that i always wanted that car and was hoping someone in the military was going to be on here so i could get some answers.

There are still huge issues about registering and whatnot. Read through most of that info at one point and the car is not garanteed to pass safety or anything.
It would appear it is way harder to import to the states than canada (but can import newer maybe?) Here as long as its 15 years old it can be imported and if it passes safety inspection you are golden.
On another note since i dont want to ask in the 3rd gen section, does the US not have JDM importers where you can go and just buy a JDM import car and register it? (obviously that wont help you bugman but it does pertain)

it would cost more for me to do it that way. i think when i get over there and found out more info ill let you'll know how its done for the military. so maybe we will get some better cars here in the states that otherwise we would not be able to find.

FYI - The Series 8 Rx-7 that I believe won best of show at SevenStockX last year was shipped back to the states after it was purchased overseas by a Marine if I remember correctly. Sweet 7 it was. Although its not a first gen I think I have pictures I could post later. He said he broke it down and shipped it back in parts then reassembled the car stateside.

ive had plenty of fellow soldiers stationed in Germany and its a bitch to bring cars back bc you have to bring everything up to US standards and from my understanding its what the current standards, i understand that the car will be coming from Japan but im sure its going to be damn near the same. your best bet is to wait till you get there and work the kinks out as you go! Good luck with boot camp! Go Army! j/k.
