I got the runs...

Today we're gonna push it OUT of the garage and let it run for a while to get the junk burned out of it. It was packed with MMO (thankfully) when I bought it. But yesterday I fired it up in the garage and the neighbor asked if the garage was on fire lol...

at least they didn't ask you if you had bought a Cessna my sons 79 has the same problem but he loves warm it up once a week we're still looking for an exhaust for it he wants to go with a stock set up

I don't know yet about the exhaust. I want something open, as in the future I plan to s/c and will probably be spraying by the end of the summer, but I don't want it to be hellishly loud. Basically as long as I won't get pulled over every time I drive it we're OK.
It has to be cheap though. In the heirarchy I'd say cheap > power > quiet.
So I have been considering a cutout system, where I'd run a stockish exhaust with a custom header and a cable-operated cutout towards the middle of the car so when I am racing I can open it up.
But it's still up in the air. I want something that I won't have to change out when I get done rebuilding the s/c motor.

I was having problems again with a major vacuum leak, and put a straightedge across the ports and I had a huge warp (so I thought) on the center ports, the outer ports stuck out another .030" at least (so I thought).
So I went to Autopwn and was going to buy some thick gasket material when I saw the guy that works there that told me he had owned some 1st-gen RX7's in the past. I told him what my problem was... so he called up a friend of his who is a major rotorhead and the guy came with me back to the shop.
Here, I still had a piece of the old gasket stuck on, must've been baked on there pretty good because it felt smooth. Scraped it clean and reinstalled the manifold, viola! No more vacuum leak, and the car actually ran and idled pretty damn nice! I pulled it in and out of the garage, didn't go anywhere because it has no exhaust. But now it is officially mobile.
The timing is off though, and the timing marks are long, long gone. Any help with this?
ANOTHER ONE LIVES!
And in the process I met a really really cool rotorhead. He helped me work on my car until after 9:30, and he gave me a lot of advice and ideas. It was pretty sweet!

I wouldn't do the cable cutout, from personal experience. The flap door does not keep it closed enough to be silent and rattles. Your best bet is to run electric or knock out the flap door, weld the holes shut and weld on a pipe to the side of the car and put a closed end on it that you can take off.

Now, I got the runs AND DRIVES! Took her around the block for the first time last night. The rear brakes are dragging (PO stored it for years with the e-brake on), it's running really rich, and the interior still smells a little. It's still pretty loud, but not open-headerly loud. I do expect to get nabbed if I do a lot of driving though.
But it got rubber going from 1-2. It's a whole different feeling when the BACK end looses traction during a shift This is pretty much my first RWD "project car". I've had a couple RWD's before but nothing nearly as fun to drive as this!
Now I just need to do a few minor repairs; OMP (premixing at the moment), rear brakes, re-jet the Holley, and get (another) muffler.

Dammit. I went to my dad's to pick it up today, was gonna drive it home, and it won't fire.
Well it fired for a minute, then died. I think it's just flooded but I really don't feel like ******* with it today.
Oh. And with the car sitting in the sun, the interior was RANK! That carpet needs to go.

UPDATE!!
Today I drove the car home- across town from the shop where I've been working on it. Took the freeway and all. Put some gas in it, and some 2-cycle (OMP stuck at idle position). Changed the cap, rotor, wires and cleaned the plugs. Added a solid ground to the housings as well, since I was getting arcing between the coils and ground.
Pics coming real soon- now I just need to WASH it.
