TX I am creating CUSTOM FB Door Panels...

I will be updating this frequently as this project is coming together fast. Since I have had real nice success with my small company that makes custom carbon fibre grips for model 1911 .45's and other popular handguns, I am making something nice for my car. I have drafted my template and will begin on the wooden plug tomorrow. The finished product will be available for the masses to view next week sometime. (However they will not be sold to anyone for a while since I wish to test them out and see if any updates are necessary....)

They will be 2x2 twil 12oz Carbon Fibre backed with 12oz Unidirectional Carbon. They will be obviously a bit thinner than the stock panels but will fit and function the same. However since I hate the door pocket, I will be removing it and MAY decide to make a door pocket. You really can't put anything in the door pocket now because you may never get it back out LOL!!

I'll try very hard to keep the pics flowing but I would like some feedback in what my fellow rotorheads would LOVE to see in an aftermarket door panel for the FB. (molded from 1984 model currently).

Thanks and check back!

Will you be making tow versions, one with and one with out manual window cranks? Us with power windows would like it without a hole.

The tricky bit is the top, where Mazda used a formed steel piece with hooks underneath that engage slots in the door frame.

Looking forward to see how this turns out!

Also interested. I am a little confused though, are you keeping the factory carpet/fabric, or will it all be carbon fiber? Will the pull handle be retained (as stock) or do you have an alternate plan?

I'd love to modernize the door pannels by changing the style around. I'm not sure if I'd like it all CF though. But I do hate the **** carpet at the bottom of the door........

I have been interested in this for a while.

Will they be cheaper than Fibermaz?

http://www.ausrotary.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=191019

I have been looking at his stuff for a while, but the cost is up there. By the way, his costs are in Aus. $.

Can't wait to see how this turns out! Is this just the panel or will you be making matching
handles/pulls/etc?

TX Well I guess the mods HATED my last post...

OK.. I will post again then.. I seem to have red flagged myself with a bang bang in the picture.. i guess that is a no no cuz they didnt post my last post or deleted it...

I will take plenty of pics soon...

By the way those door panels from the link you sent look like ****... I am going UP and over where the factory panels mount. I will be doing FLAT panels because the pocket is worthless. I will have a custom handle to go with it. BUT it will mount in the same location (utilize existing holes in the door and for strength...) It will be rubber backed to help with sound since carbon WILL resonate....

They will be much less expensive and easier to get. Notice those are in Australia.

^$675 for a panel?!! ROFLMFAO... overkill.

I have to get back to you on the exact price but i can guarantee at least HALF that price or LOWER...

Update on cheap, quality CF panels?

By the way, the Fibermaz ones are $625 Aus Dollars for two. That is $590 U.S. dollars or about $300 apiece. If you can make better ones for $150 apiece, count me in.

+1 for me. I bought an interior off someone and the only panels that aren't really usable are the door panels. I'm definitely in for some CF goodness.

I've done my own a couple times. Upholstery is a useful skill; I doubt I spent more than $100 on my entire interior.

Mods, if he does make a panel, at least let him show a pic of it. No point of even making anything for our 7s unless we can show off our work. I've redone the doors panels in the widebody and offered to redo panels for others. That doesn't mean I'm 'In the Business' of being a supplier/manufacturer.
