How tall is too tall for a 1gen?

Just wondering how tall most of you are that drive 1st gens? Im pushing 6'2 and even with the seat back all the way and reclined back to the bins my head just touches the headliner (sunroof car) and my legs are pretty bent. Were people in the 80's just not that tall or am I doing something wrong. Any mods for more head/leg room?

Fb's and fc's fit big people well. I'm 6'2" 230 and I fit nicely in both. You might be able to find a low rise seat rail for a different seat.

I'm almost 6'3" and avoid bumps in my fb lol. First a glass sunroof helps but then for me the leg room was bad as well. I ended up having the rails modified to get an extra 1/2 inch of slide back which also got a little head room as well since the seat rails are on a downward angle. Not a huge difference but enough for me.

im 6'4", about 275. I couldn't even drive the car knees hitting everything, head hitting the ceiling, it was bad .... LOL so what i did was

1: i took out the seats and cut off the humps that the seats rails mount to.

2: Bent the rails to all be flat and drilled some holes, and bolted the seat directly to the floor, (they also make lower profile rails that i eventually want but ehh that's more money.. )

3: and i took out the stock rear bins, and installed 2nd gen bins since they mount flatter not at an angle.

4: And had a 1" spacer installed to my steering hub. bringing it closer "so my knees don't hit it"

so my knees clear fine, i have like 2-3 inches of headroom and i don't need to roll the seat all the way back on full tilt. Its REALLY COMFORTABLE NOW!!! all in all it cost me nearly nothing... $25 spacer for steering wheel, $5 for new mounting bolts, had some 2nd gen bins from an old shell laying around.. an hour or so of grinding, and cutting... and voila!

I am considering this mod. Did you remove both the rear and front seat mounts? If you removed only the rear mounts did it tilt the seat excessively to the rear? I am planning on removing only the rear mounts but I am concerned that the seat will tilt too much.

If you removed both front and rear please explain how you removed the front mounts.

Thanks

2nd gen seats fit with no modicifations, and they sit lower. the turboII seats being the lowest (and the most comfortable, most say) Most tall guys only need that swap to fell comfortable.

Rotor Venom, that's awesome you did that! It would be cool if you posted some pics, it would help many of us here.

6'4 205 with a long torso (I was told when I was buying a road bike that I'm mis-proportioned...short arms...short legs...long torso...I should be 2-3" taller b/c of the length of my torso...and I fit fine. Base car, no sunroof. No mods to the seats. Stock steering wheel. I need to go to a 350mm wheel b/c when trying to catch slides during auto-crosses I hit my knees with my hands. That, and with a helmet on I have to hunch over pretty bad...

6'7"@ 300lbs. Daily Drove my car for over a year with 2nd Gen Seats and a smaller Grant wheel, it worked but not super comfortable, my car is also stripped out so I have no headliner or anything else.

Currently getting a Kirkey seat to bolt onto the stock sliders and then a deep dish 350mm wheel with disconnect so I can take it off to get in/out of the car.

you do know that cars without sunroofs have more headroom right? thus you fit better... just saying..

damn i most be the smallest one posting on this thread lol ... in my SA I'm fine but say FB seats my head brushes the head liner ... but i also tend to sit more upright ... up on the wheel some may say ... at this point in life would have to say more like 5"9"

But we do have at least three locals 6'2" and better that drive first gens and they are all daily drivers and they would have it no other way

simplified answer ... it's subjective lol

Thanks, that sounds good. I am not lowering the seat cause I am too tall, its because I upgraded to a seat that has the tilt feature (maybe from a later model SE?) and had it recovered. It sits higher than the original seat. I still have headroom but I sit high enough that I cannot see all of my speedo and tach, so I will do this mod.

Thanks

MI

6'2" and a bit under 180 lbs.

I love my 1st gen and use it as a daily driver, but it is not what you would call comfortable for me. I've got an average torso with long legs so that my big problem. I have trouble primarally with my legs hitting the wheel. Will certainly look into that mod you proposed. I don't quite have the tools though, but maybe the steering wheel spacer will be enough help.

The only tool you really need is a drill and a special drill bit that is designed to drill out spot welds. They are not expensive. You drill out the welds that hold the rear seat pedestals in place, drill new holes in the floor board to mount the seat rails and you are in business.

yeah its pretty straight forward, i had some pawn shop grinder and a old wood corded drill for the 60's. LOL

depending on how you sit it will make more or less difference. im really long legged and have to recline back thus why i also removed the bins from there stock location. some of you may not have to, and the steering wheel spacer IS ESSENTIAL! my legs bump it and the shifter all the time . so much better now.

I'm about 5-11 or so, almost 200lbs. Horizontal isn't a problem, but with the seat all the way back and seat leaned a little farther back that I'd like my head still touches the top (metal sunroof, fat SE seats). Hopefully I'll be able to mount the racing seats much lower, a cage and helmet would make it a tight fit for me right now.

+1 for the steering wheel spacer being a must. I put a dished momo wheel on top of it, the overall setup puts the rim of the wheel 6" closer to me lol, all the leg room in the world, more than both my Impreza and Accord have... Never thought to modify the rails themselves though, nice job

I'm 6'2" 240lbs and fit into my 79 no problem. It doesn't have a sunroof in it. My 82 was different though, it had the sunroof and I seemed to have much less headroom in it.
