Help here with gsl rearend
I have a 1981 gsl I picked up. The car has 13 inch mazda rims on the pass. side and 14 inch mazda rims on the drivers side? owner told me that the car didnt have posi track so he installed a posi unit out of an SE in it. Because of his broken english I just cant understand why there are 2 different sized rims? Car has no motor, he was goin to put a 13b in it out of another se that was wrecked. I know the se has bigger axles than the gsl. Will I be able to tell the difference between small axle gsl and the big axle se by looking at them? I do have another set of se axles to compare too. Since the bolt pattern is different between the se and gsl. How could he have installed the 14inch rims? They are the same rims i have on my se.

Thats what Im talking about. So when I put the axles side by side am i going to see a difference. i guess only the bolt pattern, cause they both could still be large axles. But as you see on the drivers rear, the rims are held on by studs with bolts, not really lugs.

The S3 GSL and GSL-SE axle housing are the same. Only a difference between drum and disc rears. He probably installed an SE housing and then installed a GSL axle on one side and a GSL-SE axle on the other (don't know why). Have you tried to pull the rear wheels to see if maybe they are GSL axles that have just been re-drilled to 4x114.3mm? Maybe both axles are redrilled, but he only had 2 SE wheels and already had the one on the front converted. Then he figured that having matching wheels on each side would be better than having 3 12A wheels and 1 SE wheel.. Just pull the rear wheels and it should be easy to see what he did.
A more conmmon thing is to see the SE pattern in the rear and the 12A pattern in the front. Some people swap the rear first and then do the front sometime later. It is really weird that he would break this project up between a right side and left side.

Not to mention two different sizes of wheels - 14s driver, 13s passenger.
My guess is that he parked against a wall every day, so he only ever had to look at it from one side.

Well, if I ever get a freakin minute I will go down and start pulling it apart. I just picked up a blaizer and a grand wagoneer that I had to do some work on. Got bible study tonight, and have to go get a New Yorker tomorrow. Its just to hard to tun down 75 dollar vehicles! I want to get into that gsl and start parting stuff out.
