fb in the d1

I Like to dream so please indulge me.

Ever since i got my FB I cant help but notice the limited reppin of the 12a in touge/drift any videos of competitions and local gatherings, In comparison to the amazing abilities of the 1st gen. It just seems a little off kilter.

I've seen the drift atlanta vid and i hope they keep bangin, but Could a FB compete with the Nomura Skylines or the Beu Yates AE86's?

My intention with my FB is touge with a touch of drift but if the opportunity to compete showed, It would be real temping. I'm not a hordcore track drifter but yes I could be up to speed in less than a year.

Am i the only one that feels this way? Or is there a kid out there with the ability but is stuck on having the POPULAR car.

Also the AE86, Sylvias and s13's are great cars. I raced a corolla for years. Dont get me wrong I love these cars but the FB is a easy equal to any of them.

I cant find any reason for some kid stumbling across his dads old FB and taking it to the top of D1 competition.

Yes, this goes against the popular belief that you need a nissan or a toyota to drift. I'm sure some local guys would accuse me of Hearasey and have me burned at the nismo sponsored steak!

And, Oh my god if I had a nickle for every person under 25 that thought my car was a liitle corvette or camaro! Initial D, Midnight wangan and those stories where somewhat based in reality. However they where INDIVIDUAL stories in a sea of street/touge/spirit/drift racers that had serious skills and one of them had to have a FB.

Seems to me that drifting RWD is just a little bit different skillset, than those others.

Oh, and what's a 'touge?' (heh)

i'm not sure what your asking here, if you're asking "is it possible to drift an FB or 1st gen for all that matters?" then YES, there's lots of people already doing it, well not LOTS but there are a few lol. if you're asking if YOU can do it, then YOU should know how far your skills go lol. either way i myself have thought about drifting, but i'd have to learn first haha, so...go for it man!

Touge racing is a collective term for mountain pass racing, I believe.

And what does your first comment mean? All those cars he mentioned are indeed RWD. There isn't anybody really drifting FWD cars, it really isn't drifting.

Touge is mountain downhill street racing.......with high speed momentum drifting/sliding!!!!!!!
I agree, with ya Palerider!!!!!!!!!!
if you look at AE86s for example, and if you compare them to a 1st gen Rx7
the mazda has a longer wheelbase, lower centre of gravity, a steering box
and a watts link in rear!!!!!
the AE86s have rack n pinion, and panhard rod.........
other than that they are very simmilar in weight and suspension
both cars have mcpherson struts with adj radius arms in front
and four link live axle in the rear!!!!!
In my opinion....
If you go widebody on the 1st gen Rx7, and fix the rear suspn geometry to run drift spec low theoretically 1st gens are better, much better than AE86s
if you watch D1 the Rx7s FC & FD have much better corner speed than nissans
because Mazdas are built to be race cars
silvias, AE86s never raced at LE MANS
MAZDA is still the only japanese manufacturer to win LEMANS
and they banned rotary engines within 48hrs of the win

um didnt understand the different skillset for RWD bit?????
even the Subarus in D1 have the front driveshafts removed and run RWD

Thanks for the info on le manns I didnt know that, but it made me smile.

I dont understand the skillset thing either. I dont remember bringing up a drivetrain comparison.

Touge CAN involve front or rwd but drift cannot. I do know that.... with 2 exceptions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGv2AlPSAbY I think Phillipino drivers have an extra X chromosome.

I got REAL nostaligic yesterday and went over to my friends house with a sr5 corolla with money in hand. And and I sat in it and inspected the suspension and interior geometry, My FB won. I didnt buy it. Hate to say it cause corolla is my first love but it would have been a step down in performance.

Thats when it hit me, why arent more FB's out there?

some 1st gen Rx7 race stats.......
Rx7 in July 1981 Mazda was the first japanese manufacturer to win 1st overall in the
SPA-Francorchamps 24hr race

and a bit closer to home
Feb 82 & 83 1st in GTO class,
3rd overall in 1982,
4th in 1983 at IMSA Daytona 24hr

june 1982 LeMans 24hr 14th overall

june 1982 1st in class 5 overall WRC New Zealand rally
and june 1984 was 9th overall in WRC Acropolis rally
theres plenty more but theyre the most interesting results!!!!

my widebody drift beast isnt far off...........
