I did a tranny swap today and realized once again that the exhaust heat shield is always a pain in the .............
I was thinking that since I have a full RB racing exhaust, do I really need to put the H.S. back on?

which heat shield are you talking about? the one that bolts to teh stock exhaust or the one that bolts to the underside of the car? if you have a RB exhaust then you cannot reuse the stock exhaust heat shielding. if you are talking about the heat shield that bolts to the body then yes, keep it in place!
Yeah it's the one that is above the tranny and goes pretty far back. I believe it is a three piece HS. The most rear piece is a little piece that shields the fuel pump area. All together I would say it is 3-4 feet long. It mounts to the floor of car.

I daily drive my car, so it doesn't see much abuse, just the occasional red-line and parking lot fun lol. i hated messing with the shields so i took them off and haven't really noticed a difference. I did however leave the shield right by the gas tank over the axle JUST IN CASE. if this is your situation...i'd say take them off. but try it out and see what you think for yourself. also, make sure you have a header shield....THAT makes a HUGE difference.
P.S. I haven't had any complaints from passengers about their feet burning :P
oh and as thunkrd said...just watch out for the leaves...don't off-road it

I just used a cutoff wheel to make a notch in the heatshield where that bolt for the tranny mount is. I'll never have to pull the heat shield to remove/replace the tranny again.

weird... I've never used the stock heat shields. I've always taken them all out right when I get a new FB. Then again, I don't run a cat. With a cat keep the heat shields because they get hot, but without one it shouldn't be an issue. As long as the car is running right.

That's a good idea. I was thinking that the stock heat shields are there in case a cat. conv. would get clogged or an AFM flapper would get stuck and cause those babies to get bright orange. I'll probably go ahead and put it all back on just because I'm a little paranoid lol.

I have mine removed now because I broke one of the bolt heads when I removed it to swap the transmission. It gets a little toasty inside now. I'm going to have to put it back on soon, I don't want to deal with constant heat in the summer.

Took mine off from end to end and never looked back. I don't notice the heat.
