Electric Rx7

Good afternoon.

I am rather new, but I have owned two Rx7s and am about to get another one (hopefully this weekend). In any event, I am a graduate student at Purdue University, working on converting a car to electric. I picked an Rx7 because 1) I love them, 2) great drag coefficient, 3) low weight, 4) availability.

I have a few questions. The car I am buying is a 1984 GSL-SE and it will already have the motor removed. The body is in great shape, but I would like to change some of the parts out.

First, I really do not want power windows (which were standard, I think), so I was wondering if there is someone on this forum who would want to trade their cranks for the power window motors and switches. I am hoping that they are interchangeable--does anyone know for sure?

Second, the rear hatch has the wiper, and once again, this is extra weight I do not want. I could, of course, just remove the wiper/motor assembly, but then I have a hole in the hatch. Anyone want to trade?

Last, I would love to switch turn signals, brake lights, running lights, and interior lights to LEDs. The thing is, I do not want to buy cheap LEDs that will just fail. I had a bad experience with "xenon" bulbs on ebay that I do not want to repeat. Does anyone know of a good supplier?

Btw, I live in Lafayette, IN (47905).

Thanks.
Josh

Manual and electric window regulators are direct bolt-in swaps across the whole 1st-gen range. Going from electric to manual, you'll have to hole your door panel upholstery as well, and come up with cranks and surround trim plates that you don't have.

Good luck with your project.

You'll want to just get the whole manual window door skin, since the arm rests are different.

What color is your interior?

I have a black interior. I can get you all the manual window accessories you will need, if you want to trade for the power window stuff.

Let me know!

I need a wiper motor if you want to sell yours for cheep. Let me know. Also, if you can't get new glass you could probably find some sort of grommets to fill the hole and look good. It would at least be a temporary fix.

If all goes as planned, I will pick up the car this Saturday (sans engine).

Jeezus, my interior is red, but I do want to swap parts with you. I was just thinking the motors and switch panel in the center console for your cranks, gears, and center console panel (I think it has a coin holder). PM or email me and we can talk details (neljoshua@gmail.com).

rx-7ames, thanks for the grommet idea. That had occurred to me. I will be willing to sell the wiper assembly, as well as some other parts. PM or email me with an offer.

Any ideas on QUALITY LEDs?

Later.

Just got the car Saturday. I was wrong--it is actually a 1983 GSL, not the GSL-SE. The body is in great shape, but the interior is a little rough.
I will be selling the parts that I do not want/need.
Since this is an electric conversion, I will not need the following items:
-clutch pedal and hardware
-gas tank
-muffler
-rear wiper and washer (I think that rx-7ames wanted the wiper)
-rear window screen/shade
-original radio/eq
Feel free to email or pm me with an offer.
I would also like to trade my power window motors and switches for cranks, as I do not want the extra power draw.
I have the leather seats, but I much preferred the cloth ones. I think that they are in good shape, but I will have to look closer. Would anyone be willing?

You best bet for parts is to place a thread in the 1st gen classified section on here (list the stuff you want to sell/trade) and maybe another thread for what you WTB. By the way, there has been at least 1 electric conversion on here. I know he has pictures of the battery layout and the motor setup..might give you some ideas.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I will look into that.
I have quite a few spare parts for sale. I am going to post them in the classified section.
Jeezus, you still want to trade? I tried to pm you, but it said your box is full!

Slowly working. Most stuff is in good order, so that is good. I did find a few rust spots in the rear wells, as usual, but they were small and easy to patch.

There are two switches on the brake pedal and I want to use one for the regenerative braking. Now, I know that one is for the brake lights and I think that one is for the cruise (which I removed), but I do not know which is which. Any thoughts? I could just hook up a battery and try...

Check the wire color codes against the wiring diagram; that'll tell you which is which.

What are you using for a speed controller, motor,dc converter, batteries . Are you planning on using any of the gauges- especially the Tach ? Where did you get your plans from ? I may be able to help you before you spend a ton of $$$$$$$$$$$$$ .
