I have an ad up on Craigslist, looking for Mazda memorabilia and whatnot.... I got a response from a guy who may be looking to sell a 78, in REALLY good shape, with only 18k miles on it.

He would be listing it for his boss, who has several cars with that kind of mileage. he said he was going to want to get 17k. 18k miles..... insane. he's sent me a couple pics, but quality is bad. right hand hood prop, bay looks very good from what I can see. Red/burgundy with plaid seats and old school mesh rims.

That would be a Sonic Bronze car. Cool color up close and personal, has a bit of metalflake in it. Strange things tend to happen over time and things you used to trip over in the garage suddenly become valuable and you wish you'd have taken better care of it or not thrown out during that spring clean up years back!

$17K is a long stretch at the moment, but the red plaid seats with the red/burgandy interior just screams early SA! The bad thing is, these early seat covers have a tendency to dry rot and become very brittle. May look pristine, but they become very fragile and can rip apart just from the stress of climbing out. Matching replacement material is unobtainium currently as well. Still, they are nice to dream about and drool over. Keep us abreast of any developments.

there is a strong chance one of us (not me) may have a line on the plaid I personally can't wait to redo mine in the black/white mine were originally done in

That would be a major score! Your Blk/White plaid is more rare than the Red/Brn. I saw the Blk/White in a Daytona Blue car out of Detroit a few years back and thought it worked well together. My personal plaid favoriate is the Tan/Brn in the Metallic Mach Green wrapper. I'm afraid that combo would entice me to expand my Harem.

The '81-'83 sheet metal behind the front seats has the holes in it for the bins.
It's a perfect replacement for the '79-'80 sheet metal.
.
It is highly necessary to use one or the other as this piece provides body stiffness.
.
I have done this mod on my '79 and used a piano hinge to "repair" the broken plastic lids. Some modification to the plastic lids is necessary to properly receive the piano hinge on the INSIDE of the lid where it doesn't show. I used a Stainless Steel hinge.
.
While doing this, I made a pigtail (extension) for the fuel pump electrical connection so it could be accessed from under the vehicle by pulling it through from below rather than tearing the insides out to R&R the fuel pump.
