Compliments

Lately, been using my modified 85 as a daily. Walmart, Freddys, gas station, you know...
I get attention everytime. Young and Old, must comment. These cars are becoming rare and attract the type of attention I used to get in my 69z28 ten years ago. Keep them going!! Share your stories?

Mine is a summer-only driver up here, but always a hit with either the kids who don't really know what it is and the ol' dudes like me who remember/wish they'd had one when they were new.

I get occasional complements with my DD.

I find, though, that the world is less interested in cars than it once was. Even 10 years ago people seemed to enjoy taking pride in their machines; however, nobody cares anymore save a handful of nuts. So I belive if I should get a complement its like the other person saying "Hey I like cars still too, brother".

We had our first decent couple days this weekend (40's) and since I've been in the market for a new vehicle, I took my 80 SA for a ride to a local dealership. I parked in an out of the way place and in the middle of haggling with the salsman, I overheard someone asking the sales manager about that old Rx-7 parked out there.

I ended up going over and introducing myself and took the guy out to look at it. Turns out he used to sell them and couldn't remember the last time he saw one let alone a "perfect one" (his words) The saleman had to come out and break us up to get me back to his office. Those kinds of encounters are always fun.

HA! just what a new-car dealer wants: a distraction of customers from their shiny clone-mobiles. Nothing like a sweet SA to remind people what a clean, simple car - a _sports car_ can be. Or was.
Tsk Banzai!

My 85 hasnt really gotten any compliments, but sure does get a lot of looks. I love driving it around and letting people see what beautiful machines they used to make.

Mine seems to get its share of attention. Lots of comments. I have taken the badges off so most of the comments are "What is it?"

Surprising how many people have no idea.

I usually get one of 2 responses:

"I used to have one of those before I _______ it."

or

"I used to race one of those back in the 80s."

I was in a parking lot once and this kid saw my car and was freaking out saying "Look at that car Mom! It's so cool! It's so old school! Look at it Mom!." That made me smile. I've also had guys come up to me at gas stations and ask about it, I've had a guy a Dunkin tell me about how he had one back when he was in college. I had a guy at a car meet come up to me with his girlfriend. He told me his Dad used to have one when he was growing up and told me he'd buy it from me in a heartbeat if I ever wanted to, his girlfriend said his Dad used to race an RX-3. My Dad is in love with my car, he sold his right before he was born and asks to drive it every time I'm home.

I was out for a celebration drive the other day after my smog check; Had a guy in a pickup truck follw me for a couple lights then pull up next to me. He said "I forgot how cool those old Wankels sound!"

Clearly, he used to know one.

Rotaries are rare here in BC. I enjoy the double-take people do when they see my 83 next to them at a traffic light. You can literally hear the gears churning in their minds as they try to figure out what type of car it is. Most people assume its a Porsche 944 for some crazy reason.
Gearheads always roll down their windows to hear the brap brap brap and ask if I have a bad cam or a misfire, to which I proudly reply "No pistons under this hood!" They're even more surprised when I accelerate at the lights and leave them in a cloud of dust admiring my occasional flaming exhaust

The comments are always interesting, anyways.

The cool thing about the stock 84 I used to drive around in were the comments ranging from 12 to 60+ year olds. Always positive, mentioning how few they see now a days or kids getting into the import scene. At least they know the old school RX7's, too!

The widebody on the other hand mostly gets "Damn, nice Porche".
