Choke and Acceleration

I have an 84 Rx7 GSL.

Issue 1:
The choke use to close all by itself. It no longer does. It is unclear to me what has changed and I'm not sure where to start.

The manual has an image that says once the temperature reaches this marking (shown on the image) the choke should close, meaning the car has sufficiently warmed.

How long should I let the car warm before I manually close (push back in) the choke?

What might be stopping the choke from closing on its own?

Four the first 1/4 to 1/2 inch of opening (pulling) of the choke there is no resistance, after that there is resistance and the choke holds but does not close once the car is warm.

2. I had her in the shop. While there the mechanic took the car on a test drive. His report was the engine was lacking in acceleration.

I agree. I have noticed at times that I can push my foot and the accelerator through the firewall and the engine barely registers the request for power.

Other times I can be at speed and give it a little more accelerator and she's off like a rocket.

Anyone have thoughts?

For the choke not closing, test the temp sensor on the back of the water pump.

Yep.

I read up on it.

It actually does seem to be closing.

One thing else, I noticed when the choke closes it doesn't close all the way, leaving this gap.

How do I tighten this up. So that it closes flush to the dash?

As long as the choke linkage on the carb is at rest when the choke **** pulls back in, see if you can loosen the **** set screw and make the **** flush.
