Bought a 91 MR2
I went rear engine too.
1971 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.
Although honestly I think I won't be keeping it for long. Its not a real rough and tumble car. Its a single sheet of metal for the hole body; so any body damage is a bear to deal with. I got a VW bug with the deal for the Ghia. I'm thinking SAND RAIL!!!

Yeah, but I get the jitters parking it in parking lots with other cars, owned by non-car peoples.
I think I'd be better off with a sand rail. I could care less if you hit a piece of tube steel with a shopping cart.

i dont see how this belongs in the first gen section. but i guess since ur a cop.. you can speed and text and drive and nobody bats an eye.
also i got me fiero with a VQ35de g35 swap, with maxima 6 speed.. on my list to swap is a 2GR from an 07 camry into amr2 but there are not v6 6 speed traverse like the maxima, wtf! only 4cly 6 speeds that might not hold up to a 700hp turbo 2GR

Best of luck to you in your next swap. It sounds like a fantastic idea. The 2GR-FE is an excellent engine and at 268hp, can really motivate a car. We don't see many issues with them, only leaking oil form the banjo bolt on the rear head and leaking water pumps. Other than that they're pretty dang reliable. We have that engine in our 2015 Sienna. I don't mind driving it. Its necessary with my kids.

That is a beautiful MR2! Did you order it or buy it off the lot? They're pretty rare with a sunroof. The T-tops seemed to be most common with the slick top cars being pretty rare. Would love to see more pics of that car!

We're taking over.
I bought mine completely stock back in 2009. Didn't stay that way for long. Swapped in a 1MZ from an ES300.

My build thread is here.

@mazdaverx713b: Really nice looking car. Interesting, because when I was looking for my first fun car, I wanted to look at a turbo SW20 MR2, but never got the chance. Ended up buying a 91' 300ZX Twin-Turbo instead. That car is now sold. When I was looking for my second fun car (wanting something NA and reliable) it was between an SA/FB RX-7 and an AW11 MR2. Almost looked at a MR2 but never got around to it.
I'm curious how the MR2 compares to the SA/FB RX-7 in terms of "feel". There are obvious differences in terms of specs (anyone can look that up), but how do they compare to drive? My RX-7 is the only sports car I've ever driven (my Z was more of a GT car), so I like hearing about different things.

Yep. It has peak torque pretty much immediately, and there really isn't a curve to speak up, but more of a plateau. It is a blast.
The MR2 is a very darty and responsive car as far as steering is concerned. It corners well but oversteer can be coaxed out of the car much quicker than the FB. The FB is a more stable car and acceleration is probably pretty equal to a GSL-SE. The brakes on the MR2 are a bit better before a panic stop. The front brakes like to lock up quicker than they would on an FB. Interior comfort is better in the FB as is shifter feel. The MR2's shifter does have shorter and more precise throws but the gates are spaced too close together and missed shifts were common until one learned the shifter. The MR2 suffers from a more cramped foot space and the pedals are close together. I grew up driving FB's for the first few years of my driving back in the 90's and I've ever been without one and refuse to be without one. The MR2 is a great car and feels like a sports car through and through but the RX-7 is the one I'd choose to drive on a daily basis. The MR2 is more of a toy.
How does the car compare in terms of "communication" or "rawness"? I drove my 300ZX a bit before I sold it (just recently), and everything basically felt "muted" and "dull" compared to my FB. All the inputs felt quieted, from the throttle, brakes, clutch, shifter, steering, etc. My FB feels like a real sports car, whereas my Z just felt fast and refined. The Z was a fun car, but the FB suits me more. Amazing how much feedback the FB offers to the driver. Can't wait to finish my suspension work.

Its a fairly raw and loud car. As far as creature comforts go, they really are on par with one another. The MR2 was built as a sports car much like the SA/FB. The 300ZX I feel is more of a touring car. Its a super sports car if you will. With its HICAS steering and its ability to carve through roads, I'm sure its an amazing car. But not raw like an SA/FB. The MR2 shares this rawness as there are no power assists other than power brakes. Manual steering, no ABS, and no traction control ,just like an SA/FB. The SA/FB has a way of speaking to its driver. I've never felt to close to any other car. I've owned a lot of cars and while they may be fun, there is no passion like the passion of an RX-7. The MR2 is a great car but its feeling can be short lived by a non enthusiast. The exhaust is somewhat loud and its high revving. Like the SA/FB, the tach is soaring on the highway. I'm sitting around 4000 rpm at 75 or so. The two cars compare well in many ways. I urge you to drive one if you get the chance. If you lived closer I'd say com by and take my cars for a ride.

you mean its the rubber they make the damn this out of, i've put on many solid metal replacement ones they shoulda used in the first place! yes the water pumps used to pay engine removal.. but we all knew better then that.
