Best FB 1st Gen Roll Bar / Cage vs. Building Custom
Hey guys,
I'm going to be getting back into my Turbo FB if all goes well here the next few months and my first priority is to do a full inspection of the car while it wasn't in my possession. Second is getting or building a roll bar or roll cage, whichever terminology you want to use.
Autopower Industries Street Roll Bar
$489.95+S/H
Autopower Industries Street-Sport Roll Bar
$595.95+S/H
Autopower Industries Race Roll Bar
$599.95+S/H
Or I could get a tubing bender that will bend up to 3in pipe so I could use it for the roll bar and fabbing up exhausts in my future. I can convert my flux-core welder to full gas-shielded MIG with just a regulator and some shielding gas and wire. Then it's just bend, check and weld myself a custom bar for ~60% of the cost of the ones listed above and have experience in the task.
I don't need it to pass inspections really and only plan on doing a few events with the car on some smaller tracks in the state. Some road courses and some drag races is all I'm planning, I still want to be able to daily drive the car during the summer.

I have the Autopower Race and I appreciate the extra stiffness and the crossbar to mount the back brackets to the seats which helps tie it all together both in firmness and in securing the seats.

Bolt in will do nothing for roll or crash protection but will stiffen the car. The bolt in bars generally attach where metal in the shell is thin and not designed to be stressed. Once that breaks lose inside the car in a roll or crash it'll be a hazard to your safety when it was meant to be another safety device. If I ever put a cage in my car it'll be fully welded by a fabricator that is reputable and experienced in cage building. Do it once, do it right. Safety is not the place to save money. If you want a stiffer chassis have braces made or stitch weld the body.
