Hello,
I am new to Rx-7s and have been working on getting the car registered and road worthy. Recently the add coolant light has come on the dash. I have the 50/50 mixture that is recommended to use but do not know where to actually put it. Does it go into the radiator or in a specific coolant tank in the car. I have included pictures of the engine bay. Any help would be greatly appreciated and very helpful.
It goes in the radiator. Also make sure the radiator overflow tank is to the appropriate mark (it does not have a sensor for that tank). The radiator overflow tank is the tank near the front attached to the radiator support.
The tanks at the rear of the passenger side is the Cold Start Assist tank and the Whipper fluid.
The low coolant sensor is located in the top of the radiator and must be plugged in or the low coolant light will come on.

Your first pic shows the Brake Master Cylinder (the rectangular clear plastic jug w/black cap) and the smaller Clutch Master Cylinder. These both get brake fluid.
Your second pic showing the radiator and battery ... The small metal cap on top of the radiator is where you add the coolant. Make sure the engine is cool/cold so hot antifreeze doesn't blast out at you.
On the passenger side of the radiator is a cantalope sized jug for coolant overflow. It has a "FULL" line near the top and a "LO" line near the bottom. Keep it at least half full, if not full.
Your third pic is of the windshield washer fluid jug. All due respect to KC, but the Cold-Start jug is normally mounted on the firewall right behind the washer fluid jug. Your car doesn't seem to have one. I removed mine, but here's where it normally goes.... You don't have one.
Your engine looks very clean. I'd love to see more pics of the car.
As a note, your car may not have come with a cold start assist system. I see that you're in California and the California spec cars did not have this. There was a TSB in the 90's that Mazda issued that advised that the system could be removed with no ill effects.
The coolant level sensor threads into the top of the radiator directly in the center. When you replace it ensure that you also replace the seal for it as well.
And check the condition of the rad cap. A bad rap cap will not pull coolant back out of the expansion tank and into the rad as the system cools down. You will end up with a bottle that has additional coolant in it, and the "Low Coolant" light will be on when the car is cold.
-and don't over TIGHTEN - its just a plastic sensor!!

100 likes for this! It's super easy it is to screw it up no pun intended! Screw it in by hand until it's tight, and then do a tenth to quarter turn with a wrench. I only hand tightened mine and that was enough..
I swear you guys have saved me from destroying parts with that " don't overtighten" warnings. The oil cooler bungs are another one, its preferable to under-tighten these parts, spot the leak, and tighten until the leak goes away instead of going too hard and destroying the part and blowing another 20$ ( or a few hundred with an oil cooler).
