Not buying the story personally... Maybe if the odo read higher than 8640 I'd believe that someone mistook it for 106840, but since it's lower than that, where would the Inspection guy have gotton that number from? I'm thinking its just a real clean west coast car with a cluster swap at some point.
Either way its cleaner than what we have around here, if I had a few grand I'd buy it lol

Well the guy lists his phone, if interested, Id give him a call. I can always form better opinions after actually speaking with a person. If things don't add up there is probably a reason. He mentions just getting the car from the original owner. I'd ask for that guys number and info. If everything is on the up and up there is every reason he would be coorperative and no reason he would not.

Even if it all checks out, I'd want to see it in person before determining what its worth. If it is indeed a 8,600K car, its bound to have some issues from sitting around. Issues that cost money to fix and must be figured into the price. For example, the ad mentions that the headlights are in the up position? Are they stuck there?

Does the guy have a price in mind? That is the first place to start. If he wants 3-4K you may have something to work from. If it's 10-12K you probably don't.

nope don't believe it. too many things wrong for mileage that low. also for being in storage for many yrs the top of the door panels wouldn't be wrinkled.

1985 Mazda RX-7 8500 original miles!!! california car since new-just purchased from the original owner who bought it as a gift for his wife-the body is very clean and straight-silver exterior w/ red interior-the car was smog tested in 1997 and the mileage was recorded incorrectly(108640)the actual mileage presently is 8500-the vehicle has been in dry storage for many years-the car has had some paint work due to sun fading-the interior is like new-non smoker-the radio is not working and needs to be upgraded and the headlites are in the up position-the car is still rolling on the original tires-the A/C blows cold -very clean under the hood-california title and blue plates-thanks for checking it out-contact: Michael 909-771-9694
Also, for being in storage, the car wouldn't need a respray either.

Can't legally transfer title on a car in much of San Bernardino County (I live there) without a smog check within the last 90 days... but state records available on-line show that the car hasn't been tested since 2001.

That "just purchased from the original owner who bought it as a gift for his wife" is sort of puzzling, based on that. If the seller did just buy it, title hasn't been transferred yet, & can't be until it gets smogged.

It passed smog in 1999 (after an inital fail, it then passed 30 mins later...?) and in 2001, so it's weird that the plates don't show 2001 stickers.

Could well have been in storage for the last 10 years... but maybe sat outdoors for the 15 or so previous, which would account for fading. A 1985 is, after all, 26 years old.

Close inspection of the tires would tell a lot... about actual miles, since it is claimed that they are the original tires. Should be the proper brand & show a 85-or-earlier mfg date code, should be about 1/4 to 1/3 worn down at 8500 miles, and should show some age effects.

overall the photography is not very good; here is what i see though.

1. its a GS with GSL-SE seats, which is wrong

2. the front bumper has been painted, its a different color, and its crooked.

3. the rear bumper is peeling...

4. the interior actually is nice, the door panels warp/wrinkle right away, especially in southern california.

5. the rest of the paint looks original to me, although we can't see the top.

6. it DOES have the original spark plug wires, radiator, muffler, and upper radiator hose (and clamps!), the plug wires are NOT clamped to the oil filler pipe like they should be. its also wearing an oil filter from the 90's, the big green one.

since its so easy to change the odometer on these cars, and this one has question marks there needs to be some kind of documentation that it indeed has 8600 miles.

at 1048600 miles its the kind of FB we used to see all the time for sale in high school

Those ARE GS seats, with their little checkerboard pattern.
GSL Seats would have the stripes.
GSL-SE Seats would have the solid color parts. (No checkerboard or stripes).

Up past $3600 and reserve still not met.

Bet you a cookie the auction ends without the reserve being met. Price-seeker.

I emailed the seller last week and called him on the mileage. He says it legit but I'm not buying the story. He said he was trying to correct the CarFax 1xx,xxx mileage. Still not buying the story based on car condition.

Well, this is curious. Looks like the same car was "sold," for $4,500, on eBay on Dec 5th... by the same seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ectorid=229466

Same pictures, story, etc...

Bidding jumped at the end in one step from $4050 to $4500... So now we know where the 'reserve' sits, too

Sounds like that $4,500 sale fell through after the auction closed. Wonder why?

The driver's seat also has the ware spot from going in and out that wouldn't be caused by the sun. It's really hard to see in the pic but it's there. It looks like a clean 100k car. My car had the original spark plug wires on it and it was at about 190k so that doesn't really mean anything.

Or, was that mysterious M**U bidder actually a "phantom" bidder on behalf of the seller, trying to jack up the price? Same bidder cranked it up from $3,300 to $4000 the day before then re-raised another, higher bid 5 minutes from the end. If I'm going to snipe a bid, I'll do it seconds before the end not 5 minutes....

"the mileage was recorded incorrectly(108640)the actual mileage presently is 8500" thats reason enough to call bullshit. who makes that kind of mistake and has no record, not even an old registration?

this is one real way of telling mileage, how torn up the seats are. there is absolutely no way that a seat is going to be worn in less than 10k miles. yes they can last 100k and still look decent if the owner was slim.

the car is just being passed off as a low mile car. the engine bay is all oxidized and the car has been in the elements for more than a few years, not in storage most of it's life with such low claimed mileage.

i bet he just broke the drive gear for the 100k mile indicator and decided to pass off the rest of the mileage.

yep it's clean but i hope someone calls this guy on it and if he is truly the one trying to play a fast one i hope he gets what is coming to him.

No, I meant it's illegal for the seller to be doing that in order to misrepresent the car's condition while selling it. You can do whatever you want to your property so long as you don't misrepresent a car's condition while selling it, or for other purposes of misleading (like insurance reporting) - - that being called "fraud."

Against both Fed and CA law to tamper with an odometer for the purposes of misrepresentation of vehicle mileage.

Looks like bidding ended at $4050 without popping over the Reserve.
