Is an '85 OEM AC system desirable?
Is an '85 OEM AC system desirable?
I have a an '85 GS that I'm thinking about removing the entire air conditioning system. I'm not entirely sold on removing it because it is a decent amount of work and the car is in great condition, blows cold, with low miles 90K.
I would maybe remove it to sell it, but I don't know if the OEM AC system would be of interest to anyone here.
I know this is not the classifieds section and I'm NOT listing this thing for sale here. I am on the fence and don't want to remove it if there is no interest. Moderators, I have searched the classifieds and found little if any ads for air conditioning systems complete in working order. I am asking a question, not advertising my system here. It is a decent amount of work carefully removing an AC system and I don't want to do it if there is little interest.
If there is positive response, I might (a big might) go to the trouble of removing the entire system and then placing it in the classifieds.
Thanks for any input you can offer.

There is really nothin spesh about the OEM ac system. Doubt anyone would want a used unit.
Just a hint (i tell everyone) IF you do decide to remove it, make sure you get it professionally drained as the chemicals are extremely toxic.

No real value. Sure, you might find someone wanting an A/C system, but:
1. most of these cars did come with AC, so people only want a part (like compressor) if it dies
2. many people are removing their AC for weight savings
You'll almost have to give the system away. Don't remove it if it works..you'll be glad that you kept it once that summer TX heat kicks in.

Don,
I lived 3 years in Houston and I would not be without A/C with that Humidity. :-)
Keep the A/C in the car!
Note to DJ. Copied your link for the FSM/Carb manuals. Feel the more members that have it in their signnature the more beneficial it will be to all members new and old alike.

About 84/85 ACs, I've gone around on this for years and probably spent too much time on the issue. Basically, if it ain't broke, don't fix it and if it is broke it's probably not worth the trouble and expense to fix and maintain a system that is 25 years old.
If you really live in a hot region, then AC may be a real necessity, but I don't miss it here in the Atlanta region. And there are some real advantages. You get rid of about 50 pounds and more importantly for me, it gives you much more working space under the hood in a very critical area.

After:

I ditched my power steering too, for another 50 pounds weight loss.
I don't miss either the AC or PS a bit, in fact it feels much more like a sports car without all that luxury luggage.
While you are at it you can clean things up and maybe add a 2GDFI and a dual pulley:
