1980 4speed trans fill plug size

I can't find anyplace with replacement fill plugs. Mine is pretty mangled and before I try and take it off I want to have a replacement. Anyone know what size it is? Do they make sockets to fit the square head?

Thanks!

my thinking is that it's just a regular pipe thread type plug. try the plumbing department.

There are no sockets that fir that square head that im aware of unfortunately. I use a wrench and sometimes a little heat from a map gas torch around the plug. It helps to free the plug if it hasn't been out in some time. You can create a want to buy at in the marketplace section if you are looking for a replacement plug and have no luck finding one. I do suggest removing it so that you are able to determine the exact thread size and pitch.

They do make 8pt and 12pt sockets that fit square heads, but I wouldn't recommend 12pt's on one thats tight. Too little surface contact and it could just slip and round off the corners. Normally a good size cresent wrench works as good as anything.

Looks to me like it's a 1/2 - 14 NPT (tapered pipe thread) This plug is out of a 5-speed, but I imagine they used the same for the 4 banger. You can buy a tapered plug but it won't have the magnet in it to help catch small debris. Make sure you get the tapered thread as opposed to a straight pipe thread.

Actually, after thinking about it, I'm not sure why this fill plug is even magnetic. Debris would settle at the bottom not float around by the fill plug. Suppose the oil could slosh up to it.....

Cool. Ordered a magnetic drain plug 1/2" NPT with a recessed square drive:

This engine & trans is in a 1969 Triumph GT6 so I have made an acess panel on the side of the trans tunnel so you can get at it from the footwell. Not that theres lots of room there but I need to be able to get it with a socket on an extension (or just the extension in this case). Cant fit a crescent or any kind of wrench in that hole... There is literally no access to it from under the car.

Thanks all!
