i own a mk1 and its nice. Though you do have to modify the bushings a lot! And I have a bad rattle especially in third gear. and the shifter lever than goes to the **** spins off of the assembly easily...I think this is also an issue with the rattle..I plan on using plumbers tape soon to correct it.

Miata short shifter is virtually the same if you have to modify the bottom bushing. Only thing Miata shifter has different is the little bushing on the ball and the thread for the shift ****. For 32 bucks and some minor fabrication, I say go Miata.

I bought this and installed it, no problems, very tight... just sand down the diameter of the bushing and install.

So if we are looking for Miata short shifters, is there a specific year range of Miatas that we should be browsing in?
EDIT: You guys with the Miata short shifters, is there a certain brand you recommend? Or are you guys just using the typical E-bay type stuff?

you need to look for pre-97 as they're the ones that share a similar transmission set-up with our cars....also just for ***** and giggles if you're looking for a steering wheel you can look forone with an adapter hub for a 89-97 miata as well....bolts right in and tend to be cheaper than anyone you'll find for our cars....

hmm i installed the miata short shifter, but i am having problems with it.
its super SUPER hard to shift when i tighten the bolts all the way down. when i loosen the bolts it is easier to shift, but there is still that hard feeling. any insights on what my problem might be?
thanks,
josh

short throw shifters alter the ratio (think leverage) so they will always be harder to shift than the stock units. however if it gets worse as you tighten then you are probably missing a spacer.
was there a spacer included with the kit? I have an original mazda speed short throw for my series 5 tranny and it has a spacer on it.

yea it came w/ a spacer. to make it easier to shift i just added some washers.
yea going w/ trochoid would have been a better deal, but i got my short shifter for $50, so im not complaining.
thanks for the input,
josh

the Flat plate that has the 3 holes for the Shifter Bolts..and the Big Hole for the Shifter to go through..BEFORE you put that on,Make a Cork gasket.then put another Set of washers on..then put that Top plate on.you will Notice the shifter will be a little more easy to Shift.Put split lock washers on the Top(between the bolt head and the Top Plate) and that way you can Tighten the nuts, but Not REALLY tight. You will get the Gist of it,Once you start putting everything where it should be.Good Luck.

Did you ever get your Miata shifter working properly? I'm interested to find out because I am having trouble deciding which route I want to take. If these miata shifters only fit about 90% correctly, then I think I'm gonna go with a trochoid shifter. But if you were able to fix the shifting problems....
