i own a mk1 and its nice. Though you do have to modify the bushings a lot! And I have a bad rattle especially in third gear. and the shifter lever than goes to the knob spins off of the assembly easily...I think this is also an issue with the rattle..I plan on using plumbers tape soon to correct it.

Miata short shifter is virtually the same if you have to modify the bottom bushing. Only thing Miata shifter has different is the little bushing on the ball and the thread for the shift knob. For 32 bucks and some minor fabrication, I say go Miata.

I bought this and installed it, no problems, very tight... just sand down the diameter of the bushing and install.

the mazdatrix ones are very nice.
zero rattles and bolts right in.
definitly go with it over the mk1.

Agreed, thing works perfectly and looking at the MK1 shifter and the Miata there is no difference other than MAYBE the knob thread... I wouldn't be surprised if someone is just reselling the Miata shifter at unbelievably inflated price as that is pretty much Ebay style.

FBsliderseven 03-24-07 02:27 PM

alright i guess ill start looking at miata shifters.
thanks

Are we talking about stock miata shifters or short shifters designed for miatas?

Arockrx7 03-24-07 10:54 PM

Short shifters designed for miatas.

DavidMyers53 03-25-07 06:43 PM

I bought a Miata short throw shifter keit on eBay for $12. Haven't installed it yet...

The Jorx short throws (member on this site) seem pretty good. The mazdatrix one is WAY overpriced.

So if we are looking for Miata short shifters, is there a specific year range of Miatas that we should be browsing in?

EDIT: You guys with the Miata short shifters, is there a certain brand you recommend? Or are you guys just using the typical E-bay type stuff?

I believe the NA and NB are the same. the new ones i dont like, so i dont know much on those :)

Glazedham42 03-26-07 06:11 AM

Please forgive my lack of Miata knowledge. NA and NB? Is that the body code for a Miata, like SA/FB/FC/FD is for the Rx-7??

NA= 1st gen, 1989-1997
NB= 2nd gen, 1998-2005
NC= 3rd gen, 2006-present

you need to look for pre-97 as they're the ones that share a similar transmission set-up with our cars....also just for shits and giggles if you're looking for a steering wheel you can look forone with an adapter hub for a 89-97 miata as well....bolts right in and tend to be cheaper than anyone you'll find for our cars....:)

FOLLOW UP:
hmm i installed the miata short shifter, but i am having problems with it.
its super SUPER hard to shift when i tighten the bolts all the way down. when i loosen the bolts it is easier to shift,but there is still that hard feeling. any insights on what my problem might be?
thanks,
josh

short throw shifters alter the ratio (think leverage) so they will always be harder to shift than the stock units. however if it gets worse as you tighten then you are probably missing a spacer.

was there a spacer included with the kit? I have an original mazda speed short throw for my series 5 tranny and it has a spacer on it.

i have a mazdaspeed one in mine and it is really hard to shift as well

mar3 04-07-07 04:59 PM

More reasons why it's a better idea to go with trochoid on this modification...;)

:cool:

FBsliderseven 04-07-07 08:31 PM

yea it came w/ a spacer. to make it easier to shift i just added some washers.
yea going w/ trochoid would have been a better deal, but i got my short shifter for $50, so im not complaining.
thanks for the input,
josh

the Flat plate that has the 3 holes for the Shifter Bolts..and the Big Hole for the Shifter to go through..BEFORE you put that on,Make a Cork gasket.then put another Set of washers on..then put that Top plate on.you will Notice the shifter will be a little more easy to Shift.Put split lock washers on the Top(between the bolt head and the Top Plate) and that way you can Tighten the nuts,but Not REALLY tight.You will get the Gist of it,Once you start putting everything where it should be.Good Luck.

Did you ever get your Miata shifter working properly? I'm interested to find out because I am having trouble deciding which route I want to take. If these miata shifters only fit about 90% correctly, then I think I'm gonna go with a trochoid shifter. But if you were able to fix the shifting problems....

StealthGXL 04-14-07 11:35 PM

Trochoid modifies shifters now?

FBsliderseven 04-14-07 11:44 PM

i fixed the problem. added a couple of washers and it fits just fine.
