Question (IGNITION) Timing advance question

Hello everybody. I've got my se up on jackstands right now doing a whole lot of tune up work. When I put her back down ( hopefully this weekend ) I was thinking about advancing the timing a bit. I keep hearing about people doing this. What's the scoop here? How much advance is safe, I definetly don't want to push it and cause any pre-ignition. How much of a gain is posible, 5hp maybe? I'm soooo stoked about getting my car done!
:p

not so much a gain in hp but def a gain in rev-ability... smoother... advance leading to 24 and trailing to 16... thats whats recommended for a 12a and i think like 26 or 24 and 14 for a 13b.... but experiment with what works best for ya

Thaks for the info serzy. Now all I need to do is find out what the factory timing settings are and how to adjust the timing and I'll be all set. I wish I had a manual!

Here ya go
http://personal.riverusers.com/~yawpower/pultime.html

A VERY good writeup on timing and what you should change it to... to adjust the leading and trailing you undoo the bolt at the base of the distributor and turn the distributor... to adjust the leading trailing gap you undoo the 2 screws on the vaccum diaphragm thats closest to the drvers side of the car and you move the diaphragm closer or further away from the distributor... have fun

Youll def notice a bit of a difference when you set the timing to what Yaw suggests on that website.

A brief summary for a 12A:

Set your Leading timing to 24* total advance.

Set the Trailing to 8* behind the Leading.

My 13B has around 25* on Leading and 10* behind on Trailing.

One thing Paul didn't mention is that some Pulleys have a little aluminum rivit that needs to be chissled off before the pulley can be removed, in order to perform his pulley marking instructions. I did it, and it was very helpfull to test distributors and the Leading/Trailing split. This means you only need to perform the pulley mod once. Then use that engine to set all your other dizzys for your other rotarys!!!!!
