(DRIVETRAIN) does anybody know about swapping trannys?
I am attempting to swap a t2 transmission into my streetported gslse.
Does anyone have any experience with swapping second gen trannys into 1st gen cars? specifically moving the shifter lever on the second gen tranny farther forward to fit the 1st gen? |

There's lots of info that can be found with the search button, but unfortunately, many of the pics in those old threads are gone.
In summary: Remove FB change control case, swap over to the TII transmission. This moves the shifter to the stock FB position. The pic below shows the shorter FB case compared to the TII unit. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...d=189235&stc=1 This requires removal of the TII extension housing, and shortening of the change lever by 30mm. The control rod end that accepts the bottom of the shifter is pinned to this change lever. When shortening the change lever by 30mm, the hole for the roll pin must of course be moved by 30mm as well. The angular position of this hole is critical for the shifter mechanism to operate properly. Use caution, drill the hole forward first, and then shorten the rod. The tube that the rod rides in must also be shortened. I was able to remove the rubber end boot from one of the spare tubes, and swap it over to the shortened unit. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...d=189236&stc=1 https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...d=189237&stc=1 Modify the tranny mount to suit. There's many ways to do this. I ended up using the stock FB mount, and welded ears on it to mate to the TII transmission. Be sure to measure the offset from output shaft centerline to ensure the installed angle of the transmission is correct. The FB mount sits a bit further forward on the tranny than the TII unit, so you'll need to take some measurements and build offset in compensate. Some others seem to have avoided this issue, but perhaps there are different TII tranny configurations? If you don't want to go through near that much pain, you could just use a NA FC tranny, it's a much simpler operation. All you have to do is pull the tailshaft off the FC tranny, put the one from your old GSLSE tranny on it, put it back into the car. If you have an S5 tranny, it will have a harmonic balancer that needs to be removed. You probably don't have the correct tool, just take it to the dealership and have them yank it off for $30.

Since there are constant threads concerning swapping of transmissions I have brought this back.
I am considering merging threads so that it would contain Fb trans in a SA. Fc trans in a FB and TII trans in a FB. |
Good idea doc. You might consider merging all of the swaps into a single thread, in a cohesive order so all of the different options are in a single place.

Renns has that job solidly displayed in his post.Thats exactly how I did mine,without prior knowledge of how people were doing it,and it has worked fine for years and years.Its not much work at all and the TII tranny's strength makes it well worth the effort.
I installed my TII box before actually going to a TII engine.It was bolted up to my old 13B 4port with Yaw carb.Slapping a TII tranny onto any rotary is simple if you can fork over a little more dough for a light flywheel.The correct rear AT counterweight for your engine,an aftermarket TII flywheel,and any TII clutch, will make the TII trans install a simple install with no special fit bearings or clutch discs. The driveline will still have to be custom made,but thats inevitable,and its a good idea to upgrade from the puny 1st gen u-joints whenever your gonna up the power anyways. |
