Can I use 5 year old harness at the track?
I am looking at some 4 point Harnesses.
Driver's side used twice..passenger has not been installed.(it is unused but 5 years old though..loll)
Will I run into any "track Rule" problems if I purchase these?.Any info is greatly appreciated.Thanks.STYX.

No problem for track days, but CASC-sanctioned events may require newer equipment. Check here: http://www.casc.on.ca/bulletins.php

The car won't see a 1/4 mile track..ten seconds isn't enough time for what I put into the car!
I am thinking a road course type thing. That way I can actually enjoy driving it!

Driver restraint systems shall be replaced every five (5) years from the date of manufacture OR on
the expiry date as indicated by the manufacturer’s label.

Why? If they're stored properly, away from the sun and all, I don't see a problem. Think about it, the stock belts are in there for 20+ years and never get replaced, but still work.
I know it's the rules and it's probably safer to use new, but for track days, if they're not checking and you're comfortable that the harnesses haven't degraded, I'd say use them.

This bit may be relevant too - again, issue for CASC sanctioned events, not lapping days necessarily:
2.0 DESIGN
A minimum five point system is required for use in Cars where the Driver is seated in an upright position, consisting of a lap belt, two shoulder straps and an anti submarine strap. A minimum six point system is required for use in Cars where the Driver is seated in a semi-reclining position, consisting of a lap belt, two shoulder straps and two anti-submarine straps. HANS specific shoulder straps are permitted, but only when used in conjunction with a HANS device.
Four-point harnesses have pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur in sanctioned motorsports events.

All sanctioning bodies, that I am aware of, require replacement of your belts after a maximum of 5 years. A new set of latch belts costs just over $130 bucks from Leaf and I know of cheaper ones out of the 'States from Racequip, G-Force, RJS, etc......
Just buy a new set and be done with it. It gives you 5 years before you need to replace them and good piece of mind. I just had to replace an only used 3 times set of OMP Cam Lock harnesses that cost over $350 USF, just because the expired. They look like new and it seems a waste, but the material used in many harnesses are made of different material then street car seat belts. Race car harnesses are designed with a certain amount of stretch to allow a controlled decel at high g-loads. The material in race harnesses shows a steady rate od hardening from the moment they are made and this hardening (or brittleness) is accelerated by sun, heat, UV rays and weather or chemicals.
5 years is a lifespan number for FIA approved harnesses that is well on the safe side to ensure that the harnesses provide a controlled slow down of the body in the event of a crash.
If you just want a harness for Lapping Days, don't buy anything, I will give you my like new 6 point OMP cam Lock. If you are planning on Solo 1 or even Regional racing then spend a $150 and get a new harness.

I'll take you up on that Harness Eric, if it's available..
Yes,I am only using it for Lapping.I am not in the Best of condition anymore so it won't be long before I can't do this "young stuff" too much longer. If I get this year in,I may debate next year,or Cut and Run and Sell the car.

P.M. me with your shipping address and I will pull the harness out of my Cougar and ship it to you. Let me know how you want it shipped and I will use them.
After you get it then you can send me a cheque or meet with me sometime and give me the cash. Maybe we can go to the same lapping session at Shannonville and I can show you around the track.
No rush on the cash. I am not that hard up for $20 shipping, LOL.

gah!! i could use one too LoL i'll be out on the track this year i can't wait, got my brakes done got tires and wheels, cusco rad on the way then its open lapping time!
I'll be doing some lapping this year as well. Getting my final tune on the car done in March.
We should get some lapping days done with other guys on the forum, I know Jim and few other guys go religiously.
