deflood steps. how to fix? plz help. want this car!
I did all the basic maint. stuff to the car when I got it. New oil, filter, radiator flush. I also put on new battery terminals since the old ones were pretty rough.
The previous owner had put in new plugs and plug wires.
The car is hard to start, and I usually have to run through the deflood steps to get it to crank up.
Once it is started, it idles just fine and I can drive it around w/o incident.
On occasion when driving if I let the RPM get up to high, it will put the check engine light on and then limit me the RPM's down to around 3k or so. Turning it off and starting it back up clears the engine light and enables regular driving again.

It could be clogged fuel injectors.
If they are dirty and sticking open, when you turn the engine off, they will dump fuel into the engine...
Too much fuel will not burn because there's no oxygen. Hence you have to deflood.

i had an 07 gti that was flood damaged all that was done was make sure there was no power to anything until it was stripped and dried completly, alot of electronics in a gti never had a problem, although a wierd moldy smell when ac was used, antibacterial spray solved that thats on top of what you have already done of course

Sorry but it sounds like you need to get the injectors cleaned or replaced. Not the cheapest of ways to go but really about all you can do if you want it fixed and do not want to have to deal with a bunch of kill switches like my last 2nd Gen. It seems to be a pretty common issue on these second gen cars.
