Hello, i just got a new long runner tube manifold and i had them weld in a EGT bung on each runner right at the engine flange. So im looking for a really nice (fast acting) dual egt gauge to assist me in tuning the car and getting the timing set perfect. Im almost sold on the spa dual digital egt gauge but damn its $500 ****** bucks!!. i was also looking at the koso unit but its oddly shaped since its made for snowmobiles and other 2 strokes. anyone have any expiriance with the SPA unit? here is a link..http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pro...asp?RecID=2942

 

pineapple racing had a dual EGT setup, dont know if there still selling it, but you could check there site.

With the exposed tip probe it is SUPER fast responding!!!

 

im assuming that gauge doesn't come with probes or the boxes?

 

When i bought mine directly from the manufacture it came with everything. There are no need for boxes, the sensors plug straight into the gauge.

 

Slow-acting thermocouples (the sensor part) are the primary factor in slow readings. Slower thermocouples usually have a response time of 4 to 7 seconds, while faster thermocouples respond in 0.3 to 0.75 seconds or less. Special gauge circuitry can reduce the indicated lag by trying to anticipate the reading based on the sensed rate of change. Since thermocouples work by generating electricity, all EGT gauges have at least some portion of electric guts regardless of the display type. For rotary engines, make sure your EGT gauge reads at least to 1700F.

I have SPA gauges, but unfortunately I have not been able to try out the EGT gauge yet. I can tell you that the SPA gauges are very well made. The programmable warning light is most valuable function on the SPA gauges, although that would not make as much difference for EGT as it does for the other gauges.

 

ive read in a few threads that with the needle gauge there is a bit of lag compared to the digital, even with the faster thermocouples. I dont have any open gauge pod spots so im leaning more towards the koso gauge which comes with fast probes and i can mount it on the column or under the dash near the steering column. also i love how the display slowly changes to red at high temps..

 

gauges work really well for indicating water temperature or how much gas you have in your tank.

sure, if you want to just get a peak reading at the top of your RPM. as far as tuning you really need an EGT reading to the degree in each of the Power FC/Datalogit's 400 cells.

perhaps it's just a question of what you want out of your EGTs. given that my setup w front and rear rotor EGTs cost less than $200...

as i have previously posted, during my last dyno session we found what we wanted (1550-1625) at one bar and up but looked at 0 to one bar and found we were in the 1200s... w perfect AFRs. so we added timing in that range til we had 1450 and gained a bunch of midrange. meanwhile the AFRs didn't budge. we couldn't have gotten it done if we didn't have logged digital EGT data.

Howard your setup cost less than $200 but it requires a datalogger like the datalogit to read the results correct? I dont have a datalooger what would you recommend then?

same here, i have a microtech. so i figured id at least buy a gauge to see if my rotors are in balance.

 

I have the FJO EGT-to-analog converter for datalogging. it's a compact, nice looking unit with good instructions and a detailed chart of signal output voltages.
