Question(s) about Lincoln, NE/Nebraska in general
Ok, so University of Nebraska-Lincoln has offered me basically a full ride to attend there on an academic scholarship. Now, Nebraska is totally different than what I'm used to in nice sunny Southern California so I am quite curious about the area and have a couple questions.
1. Is a car needed/necessary in Lincoln? I have no clue how the public transportation there is so if someone could give me greater insight on that it'd be greatly appreciated.
2. If I did bring a car to Lincoln given the adverse weather would a FD be a bright idea or should I look at other cars instead of an FD?
3. How is the community out there and what are the most common things done for entertainment around there (besides the obvious - mall and movies)?
Basically, I'm looking for some reason for Nebraska to be more attractive than say UC Santa Barbara (which I am also accepted to) where I can go surfing and what not all the time and be somewhat close to home or Berkeley (acceptances come out the 27th) where I know a lot of people and it's the top rated public school in the nation. I'm open to change but I really would like to know my options before making a decision. Thanks for helping out.

P.S. How cold do the winters get?
I wont be driving from NE to to So Cal, I don't like doing ~22hour drives especially by myself. This would be something that I'd probably either purchase there or have shipped in and I'd use it while in Nebraska.
I read the summary on imdb sounds a bit disturbing but iono, maybe I'll get around to watching it eventually.
Thanks for all the help and if anyone else wants to chime in feel free.
Hey man, I have lived in omaha for 24 years since I was born. The winters can be as cold as 0 for a higher or even -12 for a low. Summers get into the 90's a lot with a TON of humidity. But honestly, you would want a car for Lincoln. An FD isn't a perfect choice for winters here with the snow, but a great second car! You will want to venture about 45 minutes east to Omaha to meet us FD guys (about 5 or so of us). The BIG difference you will find is the cost of living here versus California....not that you are looking for this, but a 3000 sq ft. house brand new is about 200,000....I know that the same house can be 700,000 or more in cali

Yea lincolns pretty cool. Ive lived here off and on for about 8yrs. It is a pretty big college town and the bars are always packed. There are some nice rides around here also. Summers are fun but the winters do suck. This coming from someone who has grown up in nebraska my whole life. You should definitly bring your fd and store it in the winters though. I know thats what i do(fc) and alot of people im sure store theirs also. I think that you would be pretty happy with the campus, its real nice, right downtown... Just my 2cents

I totally did not think about the cost of living for the most part and yeah, that's outrageously cheap in my mind set.
Thanks for the input

Oh also another question, what opportunities for internships and such are around Lincoln (or within driving distance). I'm majoring in Mechanical Engineering and will probably double major in Comp Sci, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering so any info along those lines would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.
