Question New Buyer Looking at a 87 GXL

I have a ton of questions about this car.

- What are some comon problems? Overheating?

- He is asking 3k for it. Too much? How much should i look to spend. (78k miles, 5 speed, GXL, moon roof)(all i know about it) supposedly owned by an old couple as a sunday car.

- This is a non-turbo version, can a turbo be added? if so, how much?

Thanks for the help guys

price sounds a bit high.....if body is in good shape try and get price down.....if u acquire it then look to change motor from n/a to turbo.....don't try addin a turbo to the n/a block....too much of a hassle......better off gettin a turbo block and droppin it in.....

That's pretty low miles....I think $3000.00 would be a good deal if the car runs good and is in good shape. You might want to get it hot and let it sit for 30 min. and then see if it will restart.

Depending on overall condition it sounds like a good deal at $3000, I still would offer $2500 and see if he bites.

If you want a turbo you should not be buying this car. It would be a waste of time and money to try and turbo the car or convert it to a turbo drive train (including the motor, tranny, clutch, driveshaft, ECU, rear end, halfshafts, etc).

If you want to go really fast and hang with most cars don't get it. If you are happy with quick and it runs perfect and looks damn near perfect then its a good deal, might still try to talk him down some. You need to make sure the engine is in good shape though. Drive it for a long time, let it sit while running. Make sure it doesn't leak anything or overheat or anything. A compression test would be a great idea if spending $3000 on a 7.
