There's s'posed to be a set of 6.5" woofers in the door that work with the little 4"s in the dash (at least for a S5 coupe..).
Total, you should have 6 speakers, if I'm not mistaken.
I'd check the condition of the speakers in the door (blown speakers would do that), and then just adjust the balance to a place where it seems 'equal' to you.
(Sorry I don't have any pics, but I haven't dropped my CD player and speakers in yet.

I only have 4
- the 2 dash (kneecap speakers) and the ones in the wells above shocks. I put 6's in their thanks to a 87 rx in the junkyard with the ring for 6's.
(mine came with the 4's) but I cant find a spot in the door I took it apart and there doesnt seem to be a spot unless I cut metal. I was hoping someone would have a creative turn on this. something I am not thinking of.

It really depends on what year.
86-87 the only location for a 6" was above the arm rest as in the first link that [bnd] posted.
In 88 Mazda started putting in the 6" in the front lower location. 88 was a tricky year because some cars came with the newer door with the location pre-cut in the metal in the front lower spot and some didn't. All the 88 models still came with the 86-87 style door panel without a lower location pre-cut on the actual panel, even though many were compatible with the 89-92 door panels that did/do have the speaker provision.
On the FC models that the lower front location is not there (86-87 and some 88's) it is very easy to just cut a piece of aluminum plate (available at any scrap metal store), pop rivet it in, and then trim it to hold the 6" speaker.

He is right about the 88 thing. My 88 SE has 5.25" front speakers, but there is plenty of room to drop in 6.5" speakers. But, the door I took from an 87 in the yard didn't have the speaker location and had to be cut.
The previous owner installed the 5.25" and I kept the same size to avoid any more work when re-installing my system into it.
