Question on turbo upgrade on FC S5
Question on turbo upgrade on FC S5
Hi,
I am looking to upgrade my turbo. I am looking for around 250 rwhp. A friend of my recommended that I should go w/ a "TO4B .60A/R housing and 40 trim." I don't know a thing about turbos and spec's (other than driving and loving the kick in the pants feeling). What the heck do those terms (quoted) mean? What kind of power can this turbo make over the stock 89-91 hitachi ( say at 10 psi)?
He is also hooking me up w/ other needs (pump, injectors, AFC, FCD, etc). I already have intake, dp, and cat-back.
Thank you. TII

Rotaries are a little different..
What year TII do you have? the 89-92 GTX turbo can put down almost 250RWHP... That would be a cheap upgrade.. But you also have to consider fuel managment & injectos too.
A T04B would be more than you would need.. but you would want a bigger A/R... That would run out of flow really early..

I have a '90 TII. My friend told me that the stock turbo can only make around 220 rwhp at 10-11 psi (he told me NOT to run anymore than this), and I am looking for a little more (maybe 250-270 rwhp). He recommended that the .60 A/R and and 40 trim would be good for response, less lag, and will produce the hp that I am looking for. Is this right? I just don't know a thing about trims and A/R. What exactly does the numbers neam? Based on the research that I have done, trims are usually in V, H, 60-1, but never by a number like "40 trim." That's why I am confused. Oh yeah, these parts/numbers are going into my existing turbo as an upgrade.
And yes, he said that he is hooking me up w/ enough fuel and management control to produce upto 300 rwhp. The fuel stuffs, I understand readily, but not the turbo. Thank you. TII

Well 40mm would be the compressor side.. and .60 would be the exhaust side...
those seem a little small.. I would opt for a T3/T4 hybrid. They are usually good for around 300RWHP... which would be good..
BTW i have seen the 90 GTX turbo dyno at like 230RWHP with a restrictive exhaust...

Thanks for the replies so far Zach.
So how much hp do you think the 40 trim can produce (~10psi)? Or, how does the 40 trim T04B compare to the stock GTX turbo at the same psi (assume 10)? Will it produce more power, less, same? He is only charging me $250 for the turbo upgrade (and will install for me as well) so this is dirt cheap. That's why I have not even consider other options. But I don't want it if there is no improvement over what I have today. Thank you. TII

get a 60-1 compressor upgrade for your turbo. thats the best/cheapest way to get more air out of that turbo. you could probilay get close to 300hp if you have lots of mods

You guys remember the "Soup ****" from Seinfield? Well, my friend is kinda like that: big ego and lots of pride. I don't want to question his theories. So, the only two options I have are "take it or leave it!" What do you guys recommend for this part?
1. Take it for $250 and get what I said above. I still don't know how
much power this will produce...Any guess? I don't want it if it will
NOT produce 250 rwhp!!!
2. Leave it. If I go somewhere else, a turbo upgrade will cost me
around $1K ($600 parts and $400 labor to install).

well if your like me there never is enough hp in a car. so go with the biggest setup you can afford! getting the turbo rebuillt and modded shouldnt be more then 700$ total and just install it yourself, 1/2 a afternoon.
if going with a complete T04 you want to go with a 0.80A/R exhuast at a minimum, a T04B 57 Trim would be the smallest compressor i'd reccomend, it;d be enough for 450HP. be like everyone else, go for a T04, 0.96A/R single entry, 1.0 or 1.15A/R divided exhuast housing, P Trim turbine wheel. 60-1 (T04B H Trim) compressor in a 0.60 or 0.70A/R compressor housing, good for 500-600HP
Man i have tried to milk every ounce of power from my car and the best i could do is 207 @ the wheels. ( i just installed a 17lbs flywheel ). The torque was 199, but it came down as quickly as it went up. The turbo can't sustain 10 psi at the higher RPM's. Granted it's got 132,000 miles on it. So i don't how a fresh stock turbo would produce that kind of a difference. I think i will go to a TO4B/T3 since it's cost is the cheapest. and hopefully attain somewhere around 275 at the wheels. With a flatter torque curve.
