Ok, what's the deal with this canister it's suppose to surpress gases or something from the engine right?. I forgot where I read about it, and I was looking for it's function on the Hayne's manual but all I saw was "Check and Replacement", not function.

There are two lines one going to the fuel tank (I don't know what it's for) and one going to the engine (to supress gases right?). The reason is that I'm smelling fumes inside the car every now and then, but the injectors aern't leaking and I see no fuel hose leaks neither. Can the canister be clogged or leaking or something?

From what I understand it catches excess gasoline and oil vapours when the car is turned off. When the car is turned back on, it slowly meters them back into the intake track to be burned along with the fresh gasoline and air.

 

Oh. I was thinking and, I don't have the center a/c vents in the car yet. I think some fumes from the engine are leaking inside when the car is running. This isn't all the time though......So I can just scrap this mother?

 

A lot of people have scrapped it. You can either vent the vapours and such down to the ground or you can run the lines to a catch can. If you plan to race your car at any sanctioned event, you will need to the later though.

 

Ok, so if the canister is faulty, will it leak fumes? or in other case, make the car run funny in any way?

My car isn't running funny, but I wonder if the fumes are because of the canister leaking or something.

 

I would check your PD bud. Pulsation dampener. I would check all fuel fittings as well.

 

What's the function of the Pulsation Dampner? I'm gonna double check the fuel hoses and fittings, but I'm pretty sure that's not it. Oh by the way, thanks for the replies guys.

The PD is suppose to smooth out the transistion from primary injection to secondary injection. After 15 years of life, the PD should be checked. Its not common but possible that the fitting has become lose and venting gasoline into your engine bay. I recommend buying a new one with every engine rebuild or a very close inspection.

I know what I did with mine... Ripped it out and tossed it in a box of parts

 

These two problems have nothing to do with each other. Air enters the HVAC system from the cowl grille.

 

I have a bad gas smell also. Took advice from here to replace the PD. Did, same fumes. Replaced breather valve for fuel ventilation, same fumes, not from under the hood but outside the car. When I remove gas cap, huge pressure release. HUGE!!! If I relieve pressure from tank, smell is much less. Took line of vac canister, had fumes just as bad and always, no pressure in tank then.

Throwing away canister is not the answer as there are some major fumes coming out of the hoses that attach to it.

Still playing with it, but PD is not always the answer.

 

Yeah my pd wasn't leaking or anything, it looked good as a matter of fact. I don't get fumes all the time just every now and then, but I knew removing the canister wasn't gonna fix anything.
