Today I reset my steering wheel. After a wreck it was about 45 degrees left. Also installed a rear wiper which won't work (wiring issue I guess ) and reset my idle (much better). I drive the car easy mostly; have noticed alot of smoke on hard acceleration.
Find out today that my fuel return line has deteriorate to the point of leaking. (Note to self: May be the cause of poor gas mileage?)
I'm lucky I didn't catch the engine bay on fire; most of the fuel appears to have leaked onto the transmission but upon inspection it was a steady drip.
Check your fuel lines don't be so sure they are fine. I've adjusted the clamps for a very temporary fix.
I'm wondering if the leak is what caused all the smoke lately; whenever I drive hard then let off it a huge cloud of smoke followed me and a gasous smell filled the cabin.
Thats no big deal, but just check your lines!

 

hey, when you wrecked your car, did you get your alignment checked? 'Cause the steering wheel being off was most likely caused by bent tie rods/other steering linkages...

but yeah, one drip per minute is a lot of fuel going to waste, as well as a major fire hazard

I had a tiny hole in my gas tank that wouldn't even drip much, maybe one drip per 15-20 minutes. Once I fixed that, I got about 5mpg better mileage.

 

Sorry to bump this old thread, but this sounds exactly like what is happening in my car. I run it up hard, let off, and LOTS of thick white smoke "seemed" to be pouring out of the exhaust. I only noticed yesterday that some came from underneath the hood and some was coming from behind the other side where the muffler isn't.

Can someone give me directions to this fuel return line? I can't find it in my Haynes manual. . .

 

My guess is that that's a leak in your coolant line somewhere. I'll bet it's under the oil cooler if it's an 83-85.

 

oil from the oil metering pump could leak onto the headers, i've had that happen, but if it's ever enough for a lot of smoke, it's usually oil control ring blowby during closed throttle high RPM decelerations caused by high combustion chamber vacuum.
