Hi guys, I was just wondering what is the best location to put Sparco hoodpins through on the stock hood?

I did a search and got a couple of different answers, but I was wondering if somebody would also show me a pic of their setup.

EDIT: oh and the reason I'm asking is because I need to find a way to secure my hood. The latch seems to be disengaging by itself whenever I am driving too fast.

I was rapidly accelerating from about 20 to 80 and the hood just popped up like when you pull the lever in the car....someone please help me out with this

Under the hood there are 4 bump stops.

Use either pair as a location for the hood pins. It's common for most people to use them.

How do the Sparco hood pins mount on though? do I have to make a threaded hole or something? I havent ordered the hood pins yet, and I have never seen a set before.

Also, as much as I hate OBX parts I may end up having to buy a set of OBX hood pins at my local ricer...I mean racer shop. Are the OBX hood pins poor quality? or will they get the job done just like the Sparcos?

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you all know that I picked up a set of APC hood pins at my local Pep Boys. They look to be of poor quality but my hood rattle is starting to scare me, so the APCs will have to do.

I also managed to clear out the metal underneath the hood. Now I need to figure out how I'm gonna cut a clean slot for the pins. I have a dremel but I am wondering if the cutting disks will be able to go through. For those of you with hoodpins, what did you use to cut the hole through your hood? is there a stronger dremel attachment that will cut cut through the hood or did you just use the regular cutting disks (the ones that get used up really quick).

EDIT: also I know I did a bad thing by getting an APC product and putting it on my car, but safety comes first.

Are you mounting the pins in a stock hood?

Just wondering becaue I thought of doing the same thing...I don't have a rattle but it does start to move a bit when I hit about 120mph.

 

Why don't you guys simply adjust the hood latch? Just askin'. The latch is adjustable you know.
FWIW I use the Moroso low profile aluminum hood pins (the ones without those big ugly hoops) on an aftermaket hood.

I would do that, but I would only think of that as a temporary fix. I suppose I could give fixing the latch another try but I think I will still put like a wire clip that I can run from the frame to the hood latch or something solid. That way if the latch fails totally the hood wont fly off...it'll still be held on by the wire.

 

Seriously, I'd suggest just fixing the latch rather than punching holes in your hood. And why would an "adjustment" be temporary? <shrug> I've tracked my car (road courses) for 5 years now and see speeds in excess of 140 every time I go.
And some parts of the track are pretty bumpy.
If the latch is defective replace it. The wire clip migth be a good idea though. Other than that I wouldn't jump the gun, unless of course you really really want hood pins
FWIW could it be that your hood isn't closing all the way because the rubber hood "bumpers" aren't sitting low enough? (Or something like that)

Well, once it happens I'm afriad it maight happen again, even after I fix it.

Right now 2 of the 4 bump stops are off cause that's where the hoodpins screw into. The bumps stops dont seem to be the problem. I'm thinking that maybe the latch itself might be too low, or maybe it's just bad.

 

You never did say...are you adding hood pins to your stock hood?

First, if you do decide to use hood pins don't remove the 2 rubber bump stops. Yank out the plastic clip in the bottom of the bump stop and drill a hole through the rubber part and slip it over the top of the hood pin.
Second the hood latch can be adjusted "up" very easily...only 2-3 10mm nuts. Suggest you give it a try and have a little bit more faith in your abilities.

Shesh.. Hood pins at my local pep boys just stick on with 2 sided tape =0.. JK.. The stock hood is aluminum, it should cut pretty easy... you could drill a small hole and use the carbide die grinder attachment for you dremel to open them to the right size..

Your hood pins did come with a plate to put on top of your hole to protect the hood and clean up the look of your hole right?

I trid adjusting the three 10mm screws but the hood latch still kept releasing. It did it with the latch in both the high and low position, but the hood was less likely to pop if the latch was low.

That sounds like a good idea, I could drill out a hole in the hood and clear out a slot big enough for the pins.
