Has anyone replaced their oil pan and pick up tube with a dry sump system?

I would like to know how such a set up works and what components are needed for it.

I hear that you would replace the oil pan with a flat plate, and the oil would be stored in an external tank. What I don't understand is how the engine would get the oil without the pickup tube. A properly desided system would allow more time for the air bubbles to separate from the oil, thus increasing the oil's ability to draw heat away from the engine, thus reducing engine temperatures. Bubbles form under high RPMs, and air is an insulator.

This mod would be good for racers, but I'd like it for the increased clearance under the car, without the oil pan to bang up.

 

I was able to add 4 qts. to the stock pan by adding a rear section that sits the same height as the front part of the pan. I use 9 qts when I change oil and filter. The bottom of the pan sits flush with the bottom of the frame rails, so if anything hits the pan, I'm in big trouble since it would have already hit the front cross-member.

My motor sits 3/8" above the rails at the rear of the pan on about a 2-3* angle. If I went any lower I would have to notch and channel the frame rails.

I can post a JPEG of the pan when I get home tonight.

hi, You've been away it seems.
So were did you relocate the drain plug too? I bought the oil level sensor cover plate from Mazdatrix. Since the oil pan fits just in between the frame rails, there's no place for sensors or the drain plug. I didn't think about adding a section to the back as you described. Since I'm modifing the oil pan, I may concider that.

When you do this you may want to bolt the pan down to prevent warping. You will also need longer bolts to go through the 2 gaskets and the Racing Beat baffle plate.

Have fun, and don't worry 'cause it can't leak oil any more than the "A" series MG motor:p
