Stage III Turbo Upgrade and MORE!!!

I just recently got my turbo back from Bryan at BNR for a stage III upgrade on my series 4 (1987) Turbo. While I am very excited to inform you guys of how she performs I have some simple questions.

Now that I got the turbo back I can't for the life of me remember where the wastegate actuator hose runs to. I think it should run to the intake manifold somewhere. There is no nipple on the housing, nor was there one before either. Anyone know specifically where the hose plugs into???

Also I just sent out my computer to E.L. Prototypes for an upgrade. They can only dial in injectors up to 600cc, I have 4 720cc injectors. My question is this, how will the bigger injectors affect drivability. I am not concerned with the power loss because I know an S-AFC can help me lean it out, but untill I can afford it how will running so rich affect the car?

By the way although I haven't been able to run the car with the new turbo yet, thus far I definitely want to give Bryan at BNR thanks for everything. He has been quick to answer all of my dumb questions and very informative. As a customer I am very satisfied thus far.

I will be giving updates as to how the car performs and rides ect as soon as I get my computer back and everything is installed. That wastegate thing is really puzzling me though. I could have sworn I marked where it went...

PLEASE help guys, I have been carless all summer for this project!!

Dan

I'm assuming the turbo upgrade you did involved a whole new compressor housing - this is normal for a "big" hybrid turbo upgrade. The wastegate should see a boost reference as close to the turbo's outlet as possible.

What I've done in these cases is remove the compressor housing, drill a hole and tap it to 1/8th NPT or 1/4 NPT, and put in a brass fitting with a hose barb. Then, run the line from there to the wastegate actuator or the boost controller. You can use other sources for your boost pressure, but you may have boost control issues.

The car will run fine with 4 720cc injectors, but it will run quite rich, might not want to cold idle, and will drink gas. But, in general, the car should start, run, drive and get you to work.

You might also want to look at the Greddy E-manage - it's pricier than the Super-AFC when you add in the software, but it has a LOT more flexibility. For adding larger injectors, you just put in what your stock size injectors are and what size new injectors you have, and you're done. But, if money's really an issue, the Super-AFC works great and has a proven track record.

Yeah you should be running real rich at idle, depending on how much boost you are running, you might be alright or really rich. I know someone with a S-AFC and 4 720cc injectors, He is running like 12 to 13 lbs of boost on a stock turbo and he has to turn down the injectors.
You will definately have enough fuel unless you are running an ungodly amount of boost.

I do plan for an S-AFC in the future. What my main concern in the Wastegate line, I for some reason am almost positive it wasn't on the housing. Anyone with an '87 care to check? lol. I am stumped, I was once told it went into the intake manifold...??

The stock compressor housing used to have a press fitted hose barb which connected to your wastegate actuator.. your new compressor housing does not have this barb ...
You can either remove your new compressor housing and tap a new hole into it and put in a new barb, or tap into the hard pipe above your compressor housing (the pipe that connects to the BAC and also your BOV)

That is a pic of the stock turbo beside an upgraded one.. you'll notice the hole on the stock turbo (on the left) where the stock hose barb used to be

Thanks fellas. I don't know why I don't remember the hose going to the compressor housing. When I took it out it just doesn't fit to me that it was there, hmph. I guess I should have paid more attention. As far as drilling and getting a brass fitting with a hose barb, any one know where I can get this, and possibly a model number?? Thanks!!

You can get the fitting/etc. at pretty much any hardware store. Just get a 1/4 NPT tap with the matching drill bit, and drill/tap a hole. Then, just find a brass fitting that's 1/4 NPT with a hose barb on it. SUPER easy. Should cost like $5 tops.
